Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone Without an App
Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default. It's efficient — smaller files, great quality — but the moment you need to email that photo, upload it to a website, or send it to a friend on Android, HEIC becomes a problem. Most of the internet still speaks JPG.
The common fix is downloading a converter app from the App Store. That works, but it means installing yet another app (many are paid or ad-heavy), granting it photo library access, and — for cloud-based converters — uploading your personal photos to someone's server.
There's a simpler option: convert right in your browser, with no app install at all.
Why the browser works for HEIC conversion
Modern iPhones run Safari, which can read HEIC files natively. The trick is getting the output somewhere useful without a server round-trip. A browser-based converter that does the decoding and re-encoding locally can hand you back a JPG without your photo ever leaving the phone.
That matters more than it sounds. Photos of kids, IDs, receipts, documents — these are the exact files you don't want sitting on a stranger's upload server, however briefly.
The 3-step process
- Open the converter in Safari. No install, no account. Just a page.
- Pick your HEIC photos. They stay in your browser tab — nothing is uploaded. You can convert in batches.
- Download the JPGs. They save straight to your Files app or Photos, ready to share.
The whole thing takes seconds per photo. Because conversion happens on-device, it even works on a spotty connection — the page loads once, then everything is local.
When this beats the alternatives
- Sharing with non-Apple users: A JPG opens everywhere. A HEIC file often shows as a broken attachment on Android or Windows.
- Uploading to websites: Job portals, government forms, and forums that only accept JPG/PNG no longer force you to fiddle with Settings first.
- Emailing photos: Some mail clients mangle HEIC attachments; converting first avoids the "I can't open this" reply.
One setting worth knowing: on your iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. That makes future shots JPG by default. But it won't fix the thousands of HEIC photos already in your library — for those, a quick browser conversion is the fastest route.
Try it
You can convert HEIC to JPG for free in your browser, no app needed: FileOnTap HEIC to JPG — files are processed locally on your device and never uploaded to a server.
Disclosure: I'm the developer of FileOnTap. I built it because I was tired of converter apps that upload your photos just to change their format.
