Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to JPG Before Uploading to a School Lunch Program Application

A school lunch program application usually asks for one recent photo of your child for the meal card, and many school portals only accept JPG uploads. iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, so a perfectly good photo can be refused with a vague "invalid file type" message right when you are trying to finish the application.

  1. Keep the HEIC original. Do not overwrite your original. Convert a copy for the application and keep the HEIC master, in case the school later asks for a clearer photo for the meal card.

  2. Do not just rename it to .jpg. Renaming changes the extension, not the contents. The file will still be HEIC data, and the portal will still reject it.

  3. Convert a copy to JPG for the application. If you need a JPG quickly, you can convert HEIC photos to JPG for school lunch program applications entirely in the browser: the conversion happens on your own device, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. Then check the JPG preview before submitting — confirm your child's face is clearly visible and the photo is the right way up.

That is the whole fix: one converted JPG, uploaded as the school asks, and the application goes through. If the portal also has a file-size limit, convert a second, smaller copy rather than cropping your child's face out of the photo.
