How to Convert HEIC to JPG for Discord, Slack, and Forums That Reject HEIC Uploads (Free)

You take a photo on your iPhone, try to drop it into Discord, Slack, or a forum thread — and it bounces. Sometimes you get an error, sometimes the upload silently fails, sometimes it arrives as a file nobody can preview. The cause is almost always the same: the photo is HEIC, and the platform only accepts JPG or PNG.

Why HEIC gets rejected

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is what iPhones have saved photos as by default since iOS 11. It stores roughly the same quality as JPEG at about half the file size. The problem is compatibility: many chat apps, forums, and upload forms were built around JPG and PNG and never added HEIC support. Discord and Slack both handle HEIC inconsistently across devices — it may preview on one phone and fail on another — and most forum software rejects it outright.

Renaming the file from .heic to .jpg does not fix it. The data inside is still HEIC-encoded, so the upload either fails again or arrives corrupted. You have to actually convert it.

The fastest fix: convert in your browser, no install

You do not need to install an app for this, and you do not need to change your iPhone's camera settings (which only affects future photos anyway). Open a converter in your browser, drop in the HEIC photo, download the JPG, then upload that JPG to Discord, Slack, or the forum.

One caution: most "online converters" upload your photo to their server first. For a meme or a screenshot that hardly matters — but for personal photos, screenshots with private chats, or anything from a work Slack, an upload is a needless privacy trade-off. Pick a converter that does the work locally in the browser instead. I built FileOnTap so you can convert HEIC to JPG for Discord and Slack — the conversion runs on your own device via JavaScript, nothing is sent anywhere, no account needed.

Step-by-step

  1. Find the HEIC file. On iPhone: Photos → select → Share → Save to Files (this keeps the original HEIC). On PC: locate the transferred .heic file.
  2. Open the converter in your browser. Any modern browser works — Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox.
  3. Drop in the HEIC file and pick JPG. For Discord, JPG at default quality is fine for chat; for a forum avatar or banner, PNG preserves sharp edges better — but JPG is the safest universal choice.
  4. Download the JPG and upload it to the platform. If it still bounces, check the platform's file-size limit: Discord's free limit is 25 MB per file, and many forums cap attachments at a few MB. Re-saving at slightly lower quality or resizing solves that.

Three gotchas

  • Live Photos: a Live Photo exports as HEIC plus a short video. Convert the still frame, not the video — chat apps will not take the video as a photo.
  • Orientation: HEIC stores orientation as metadata. If a converted JPG comes out sideways, that is the converter mishandling metadata — try a different converter rather than rotating every image by hand.
  • Screenshots: iPhone screenshots save as PNG already. If a screenshot will not upload, the problem is size or format elsewhere, not HEIC.

The short version

HEIC is a good format that too many platforms still reject. Converting to JPG in the browser — locally, without uploading — is the one-step fix that works on any device, for any chat app or forum.

Disclosure: I'm the developer of FileOnTap. The no-upload point applies whichever tool you pick — if a converter doesn't state where processing happens, assume your file gets uploaded.
