The 3 LLM Interview Question Types I See Most in 2026 (and How to Practice Them)

If you're interviewing for ML roles this year, the LLM loop has quietly changed. Here are the three question types I see most often in 2026 interview reports — and how I'd practice each.

1. Coding with an LLM twist

LeetCode-style rounds are still there, but interviewers now add LLM-flavored constraints: "implement a tokenizer," "write a top-k sampler with temperature," or "cache-friendly attention." The coding part is easy; the hard part is narrating your choices under time pressure.

Practice tip: solve the problem first, then re-solve it while explaining every decision out loud. Interviewers score communication as much as correctness.

2. LLM system design

"Design a RAG pipeline," "design an eval harness," "design a serving system for 10k QPS." These questions test whether you can decompose a fuzzy problem into components: data ingestion, retrieval, ranking, generation, evaluation, monitoring.

Practice tip: always start by scoping — ask about QPS, latency budget, data freshness. Then draw the pipeline before diving into any one box. Most candidates fail by going deep too early.

3. LLM fundamentals under pressure

"Why does temperature 0 not guarantee determinism?" "Explain RoPE vs absolute positional embeddings." "What breaks when you scale batch size in RLHF?" These are short-answer rounds that punish memorized definitions and reward first-principles thinking.

Practice tip: for every concept, prepare a 30-second version and a 3-minute version. Interviewers escalate when your short answer is good.

I've collected my full set of 2026 LLM interview questions, organized by these three types with practice frameworks for each, into one guide: the LLM Interview Playbook ($39) — https://mleplaybook.gumroad.com/l/zjuft?utm_source=devto&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=llm-book-2026 (Note: the guide is written in Chinese / 本书为中文版.)

Good luck out there. Happy to answer questions about the LLM interview loop in the comments.
