Tailscale Has a Free Mesh VPN — Connect All Your Devices Without Port Forwarding

A remote developer needed to access his home lab from a coffee shop. Port forwarding meant exposing services to the internet. Dynamic DNS kept breaking.

Tailscale builds a mesh VPN using WireGuard. Every device gets a stable IP. No port forwarding, no firewall rules, no exposed services. Just works.

What Tailscale Offers for Free (Personal Plan)

  • 100 Devices - Connect up to 100 devices for free
  • Mesh Networking - Direct device-to-device connections (no relay bottleneck)
  • MagicDNS - Access devices by name (laptop.tail1234.ts.net)
  • Exit Nodes - Route traffic through any device
  • Subnet Routing - Access entire LANs remotely
  • ACLs - Control who can access what
  • SSH - Tailscale SSH without managing keys
  • HTTPS - Free HTTPS certs for every device

Quick Start

curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh
sudo tailscale up
# That's it. Check your IP:
tailscale ip -4
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Every device running Tailscale can now reach every other device. Through NATs, firewalls, across networks.

Use Cases

  1. Home Lab Access - SSH into Raspberry Pi from anywhere
  2. Dev Environments - Access staging servers without VPN gateways
  3. File Sharing - Direct device-to-device, no cloud middleman
  4. Self-Hosted Services - Access Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Home Assistant remotely
