Losing access to Claude in the middle of a project is frustrating, especially if you relied on it for coding or long-document work. This guide covers three things: what to do first, how to avoid losing work next time, and which alternatives are worth trying for each use case.
Step 1: Understand why it may have happened
Anthropic's usage policy and supported-regions list are the two most common factors. Suspensions are often linked to:
- Using Claude from a region where it isn't officially offered;
- Payment or identity signals that look inconsistent;
- Shared accounts or automated, high-volume usage outside the API;
- Content that violates the usage policy.
We summarized the commonly reported reasons (in Chinese) at Claude account ban reasons.
Step 2: Appeal through official channels
If you believe it was a mistake, use the official appeal form linked from Anthropic's support center. Be factual and brief. If you had a paid subscription, mention it and ask about the refund policy; outcomes vary case by case, so don't rely on third-party "unban services," which are often scams.
Step 3: Protect your work going forward
- Export important conversations regularly instead of treating chat history as storage.
- Keep prompts and project instructions in your own files so you can move them to any model.
- Use Git for code, so an AI agent's changes never live only inside a chat.
- Avoid single-vendor lock-in: a tool that supports multiple models keeps you productive if one account goes away.
Alternatives by use case
Coding
- Cursor and Windsurf: AI IDEs that let you switch between several model providers.
- OpenAI Codex and GitHub Copilot: strong agentic and inline coding options.
- Trae: free tier is generous and accessible in more regions.
- DeepSeek via API: excellent price-to-performance for code generation.
Writing and analysis
- ChatGPT and Gemini: the closest general-purpose peers, where officially available.
- Kimi: very good at reading long documents and web pages.
- Mistral Le Chat: a solid European option.
Long documents and research
- NotebookLM for grounding answers in your own sources.
- Perplexity for cited web research.
Running models yourself
- Open-weight models (Qwen, DeepSeek, Llama, Mistral families) via Ollama or LM Studio keep your data local and can't be "banned," at the cost of hardware and some capability.
Picking one
Ask three questions: Is it officially available where I am? Does it support the workflow I need (IDE, API, documents)? Can I export my data easily? The tool that passes all three is a better long-term choice than whichever model tops a benchmark this week.
