Anthropic Donates Agent Skills Standard to Linux Foundation Agentic AI Foundation

Anthropic has donated Agent Skills, the open standard that gives AI agents specialized knowledge and workflows, to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, moving one of the most widely adopted agent interoperability standards into vendor-neutral governance.

From Claude Feature to Industry Standard
A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a specific task or domain, along with any scripts or reference material it needs. Anthropic developed the concept while working on Claude Code, which handled general knowledge work well but often lacked the procedural knowledge that real business tasks require: how a team reviews a contract, which steps a month-end close has, what a client report must contain. The feature reached Claude in October 2025, and within weeks developers had published thousands of skills on GitHub and written loaders for Codex, Cursor and OpenCode. Anthropic published Agent Skills as an open standard in December 2025.

Adoption at Scale
The uptake since then has been substantial. More than 70 agent platforms have integrated the standard, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. By the Anthropic count, one million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed, figures the company disclosed with the announcement and that have not been independently verified. Either way, the format has escaped its birthplace: it is no longer a Claude feature but shared infrastructure that competing products read.

A Neutral Home
Announced on October 22 at AGNTCon and MCPCon in San Jose, the donation transfers the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain to the Agentic AI Foundation, the Linux Foundation body that Anthropic co-founded with Block and OpenAI and to which it previously donated the Model Context Protocol. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra, co-creator of MCP, and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers. The proposed roadmap starts with versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills, and developers can keep using or contributing to the standard without joining the foundation.

The Agent Stack Consolidates
The handover was not the only governance news of the day. The Agentic AI Foundation simultaneously added Open Responses from OpenAI, an open specification for multi-provider model interfaces; OpenEnv from Hugging Face, a hub for reinforcement learning environments; and OpenSandbox from Alibaba for running agent code safely. With A2A, agentgateway and Agent Router already hosted, the foundation now counts ten projects and 305 member organizations less than a year after launch. The plumbing of the agent stack, covering connections, skills, interfaces and sandboxes, is steadily moving under neutral governance.

Why It Matters
For enterprises, the significance is less about the format, which does not change, and more about ownership. Procedures written down as skills now sit on a standard that no single AI vendor controls, which makes organizational know-how portable across assistants, coding tools and open-weight models. It also gives procurement teams a simple question to put to any agent vendor: do you read the Agent Skills format, and which version? The caution is equally clear: both lead maintainers work for Anthropic, and neutral governance remains a promise until the first contested proposal tests it.
