DeepSeek Leads $400M Win Verse AI Seed Round

Bloomberg reported on October 12 that DeepSeek will lead a seed financing round for Win Verse AI, a stealth-mode Hangzhou startup, valuing it at roughly $400 million. Founded by Hu Han — a former Tencent chief scientist who co-authored the Swin Transformer paper — Win Verse is building the AI "brain" that lets humanoid robots perceive their environment, interpret spoken commands, and act autonomously in the physical world. The investment comes barely a week after DeepSeek closed its own $12 billion external funding round, backed by Tencent and CATL. It marks a decisive strategic pivot: after years of leading the open-weight LLM race, DeepSeek is betting the next frontier of AI leadership will be embodied intelligence. The move follows a earlier August stake in Unitree Robotics' Shanghai IPO, cementing DeepSeek's position in China's fast-growing humanoid robotics ecosystem.

Key Context: DeepSeek is not alone in this pivot. The global humanoid robotics race has heated up dramatically: Figure AI reportedly seeks a $1.5B round at a $39.5B valuation (15× its 2024 level), while Tesla aims to scale Optimus production from 5,000 to 50,000 units in 2026. But DeepSeek's move is distinctive — it's a lean AI lab, not a hardware giant, placing a bet on what many observers call the bottleneck problem of humanoid robotics: "Large language models predict the next word. Nobody yet reliably predicts the next joint angle." Win Verse is explicitly built to close that gap. With China now shipping 90% of global humanoid robot units and backed by $20B in government subsidies, the Hangzhou-based ecosystem is emerging as a full alternative to Silicon Valley's hardware-first approach.
