I built ReduceGIF — compress, crop, reverse & remove GIF backgrounds in your browser

Why another GIF tool?

Most online GIF compressors upload your file to a server. That works, but it’s slow, privacy‑awkward, and often watermarked.

I wanted a toolkit that keeps the file on your device and still does the useful edits people need every day.

Meet ReduceGIF

ReduceGIF is a free browser‑based GIF toolkit:

  • Compress animated GIFs (gifsicle compiled to WebAssembly)
  • Resize by scale or max width
  • Crop with a drag selection
  • Reverse frame order
  • Remove backgrounds (color key or on‑device AI cutout)

No account. No watermark. Processing happens locally in the browser.

How it works (high level)

  • Static site built with Astro
  • GIF optimization via gifsicle‑wasm
  • Frame decode/encode with gifuct‑js / gifenc
  • Optional AI background removal with @imgly/background‑removal + ONNX Runtime Web
  • Hosted on Cloudflare Pages

Feedback welcome — especially on compression quality vs size, and AI bg‑removal limits.

Indie project. Free to use.
