Material Change | When AI Evolves Beyond Its Approved State | R.A.H.S.I. Framework™

Your production agent may keep the same name, interface and endpoint while no longer operating in the state you originally approved.

Approval is a point-in-time decision about an assessed operating state

That state includes four layers:

  • Agent version | the version receiving traffic.
  • Deployed configuration | model, instructions, capabilities and runtime settings.
  • Dependencies | grounding sources, connectors, tools, APIs and downstream services.
  • Runtime trust state | identities, permissions, policies, ownership and access boundaries.

A material change occurs when one of these meaningfully alters what the agent can access, infer, decide or do — or changes the trust boundary around those actions.

Material change ≠ new version

A model migration can change instruction interpretation or tool selection. Grounding may change without redeployment. A connector may point elsewhere. Permissions may expand. Policies may shift. The endpoint can remain identical while the approved state has moved.

Baseline the approved state. Detect changes. Classify materiality. Reconstruct the before-and-after state. Re-evaluate affected behavior. Route the decision to the technical owner and accountable sponsor. Then monitor for drift.

Metrics can show latency, success rate or evaluation outcomes, but they do not always reveal which dependency, configuration or permission changed.

A change log records change. It does not prove that the current state still matches the basis of approval.

The goal is reconstructability

Explain what was approved, what is running now, what changed, who accepted it and what evidence supports continued operation.

R.A.H.S.I. principle

Approval does not automatically travel with an agent’s name.

When model, configuration, dependencies, access, policies or observed behavior materially change, assurance must catch up.

That is how an agent evolves without leaving its approval behind.
