GitHub vs. GitLab: Whats the diffrence and which one should a beginer use?

Hi evryone!

Im completely new to the dev world and just trying to wrap my heda around version control. I finaly understand the basics of git commit and git push (wel, mostly!), but now Ive hit a bit of a wall when it comes to actualy hosting my code online.

I keep seeing two names evrywhere: GitHub and GitLab.

To a total rokie like me, they look like they do the exakt same thing. I know GitHub is super popluar and evryone says you need it for your resume, but I also see a lot of job postngs and tutorials mentioning GitLab.

My quetions for you all:

What is the actual diffrence between the two in simple terms?

As a beginer just looking to store my first few projects and eventualy build a portfolio, does it mater which one I pick right now?

I would love to hear which one you preffer and why! Any advice for a newbie just trying not to acidentally delete their code is greatly apreciated.
