You've built an app. A marketplace. A SaaS tool. But nobody's using it.
Why? Because you built what you thought people needed, not what they actually asked for.
Here's where sales discovery enters the founder conversation.
Most Founders Skip This
Founders love building. They love coding. They hate talking to users
So they:
- Ship a feature
- Wonder why nobody uses it
- Ship another feature
- Wonder why that doesn't work either
- Burn runway
- Die
Meanwhile, founders who talk to users first do discovery before they code
The Discovery Framework (For Product Builders)
Phase 1: Before you build anything
Talk to 20 potential users about their actual problem (not the problem you assumed)
Take notes. Really listen.
Ask: "What are you trying to solve? How are you solving it now? What gets in the way?"
Phase 2: Present your idea
Explain your solution to 5 of those users
Watch their reaction (not their words)
Ask: "Would you actually pay for this? When?"
Understand their decision
process: "Who else would need to approve this? What's your budget?"
Phase 3: Build minimally
Build the simplest version that solves their #1 problem
Get it in front of users within 2 weeks
Iterate based on actual usage, not opinions
Phase 4: Before scaling
Have discovery conversations with 10 paying customers
Confirm: Budget, Authority (are they the decider?), Needs (are we solving the right problem?), Timeline (are they sticking around?)
Why This Matters for Founders
Every feature you build is a bet. If you're betting blind, you're throwing money away.
Founders who do discovery:
Waste less engineering time
Build features people actually want
Know their pricing before launch
Understand their customer acquisition cost upfront
Close early customers faster
Your Next Move
Before you write one line of code, talk to 5 potential customers about their problem. Document their answers. Then build.
Sounds slow. But it's way faster than building the wrong thing
