Your 0-100 Digital Footprint Score: How It Works and How to Raise It

The first thing anyone looks at in a footprint report is the number: a 0-100 digital footprint health score. It turns the vague question "are my old tweets a problem?" into something you can compare and track over time.

Where the score comes from

The score is not a vibe. It's a weighted result of scanning your X archive tweet by tweet, detecting privacy-sensitive information, and deducting points by risk level:

  • High risk: phone numbers, home addresses, ID numbers — each one is a big deduction
  • Medium risk: emails, precise location check-ins, sensitive media
  • Low risk: workplace rants, opinions, anything that could identify you indirectly

0 means your account is almost all exposed sensitive information; 100 means the scan found no obvious exposure. Most people land between 40 and 70 on their first scan. Not because you're "dirty" — because ten years of tweets always accumulate a few landmines.

What costs the most

The score weighs risk count × risk level, not raw tweet volume. A phone number slipped out in 2014 costs more than a hundred harmless daily posts. Typical account distribution:

Why the 3,200 limit makes the score necessary

Manual deletion only ever touches the most recent 3,200 tweets — and the riskiest old content sits further back. A footprint check reads the full archive, so the score covers your whole history. That's why "score plus bulk delete" is the combo that works: let the score tell you where the problems are, then clean by risk priority.

How to bring the score back up

  1. Delete by risk first — phone numbers and addresses first, fastest recovery
  2. Handle check-ins — travel posts are a minefield; batch-delete location-tagged tweets
  3. Whitelist what matters — keep the tweets with real meaning to you
  4. Re-check regularly — rescan quarterly and clear new exposures before they pile up

Getting back above 90 doesn't mean "perfect." It means "no obvious exposure found in the current scan." The score is a checkup, not a diploma.
