Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has asked a judge to block OpenAI from presenting ChatGPT as a human‑like entity. He argues that the bot’s use of first‑person pronouns and emotive language creates a false sense of trust, encouraging users—especially younger audiences—to rely on it as a "friend" while the platform harvests more engagement data.
In the filing, Uthmeier also demands that OpenAI cannot roll out new AI models without third‑party approved safety guardrails. He cites recent security lapses at Hugging Face, an Australian government site, and U.S. government portals, and points to warnings from researchers and former OpenAI staff about the risks of unchecked AI development.
OpenAI responded through spokesperson Drew Pusateri, noting that the company has paused training its most capable models until additional safeguards are in place. Pusateri emphasized that governments play a crucial role in establishing robust AI safety standards and that OpenAI is ready to collaborate with Florida and other states on pragmatic policies that apply across the industry.
If the court grants the injunction, it could force AI developers to rethink how they market conversational agents, potentially curbing anthropomorphic branding and imposing stricter oversight on future model releases.
