When optimizing web applications, it's easy to get lost in micro-optimizations that don't move the needle for end users. After auditing our stack recently, here are 5 simple, high-impact changes that made the biggest difference in real-world load times and server response:
- Offloading Heavy Workflows to Background Queues
If an endpoint doesn't need to return data immediately (like sending emails, generating reports, or background syncs), push it to a job queue (like Redis / BullMQ) and return a quick 202 Accepted. Keeping the request-response cycle light dropped our average API response time significantly.
- Aggressive Asset Optimization & Modern Formats
Switching static imagery from legacy PNG/JPEG formats to WebP/AVIF cut our total page weight by over 50%. Combined with responsive srcset attributes and lazy loading below-the-fold assets, initial viewport rendering felt instant.

Leveraging edge caching (via Cloudflare or a CDN layer) for semi-static API responses and public assets took immense pressure off our origin servers during traffic spikes.
