The One-Page Business Plan Every Freelancer Actually Needs

You do not need a 40-page business plan.

You need one page that answers the questions that actually determine whether your freelance business works.

Here is the structure.

Who I help: [Specific type of client, not "anyone who needs development work"]

Example: "Early-stage SaaS founders who need their MVP built cleanly enough to raise funding."

The problem I solve: [One or two sentences describing the specific pain]

Example: "Early-stage founders often hire cheap developers to save money on the MVP and end up with code they cannot build on. I build MVPs that are ready for a technical co-founder or senior developer to take over."

How I find clients: [Two to three specific channels, not "networking and referrals"]

Example: "LinkedIn content targeting early-stage founders. Direct outreach to founders in YC and similar communities. Referrals from designers and product managers I have worked with."

What I charge: [Your target rate and project minimum]

Example: "Minimum project: $5,000. Hourly equivalent target: $120/hr."

What I will not do: [The work that is outside your focus, even if you could do it]

Example: "No maintenance contracts, no small one-off changes, no projects under $3,000."

My 90-day goal: [One specific, measurable outcome]

Example: "Two new clients at or above project minimum by end of Q3."

How I will know it is working: [The leading indicator, not just revenue]

Example: "Two qualified inbound leads per week from content and referrals."

That is it. One page. Six sections.

Why this format works

Most freelancers operate without a plan because building one feels like a big task. One page is not a big task.

The value is not in having the document. It is in having answered the questions. Most freelancers have never written down exactly who they help, how they find clients, or what they will not do. Answering those questions changes how you work.

How often to update it

Every 90 days. Look at the goal you set. Did you hit it? What changed? Update the sections that are no longer accurate.

This is not a document you frame and hang on the wall. It is a working reference that reflects how your business actually operates.
