If you quote $4,000 for a project you estimate at 40 hours, your target rate is $100/hr. If the project takes 55 hours, your actual rate was $72/hr. That gap is actionable information.
Over several projects, you will see patterns: which project types you estimate accurately and which you consistently underestimate. Which phases of a project take longer than you plan. Which client types require more revision cycles.
This data is the foundation of better estimates.

Track time on every project. At the end, compare the estimate to the actual.
After five projects, you have enough data to see patterns. You know you consistently underestimate integration work by 40%. You know that client communication takes two hours per week, not the one you budget.
You change your estimates based on actual data rather than optimistic assumptions.

If your effective rate on most projects is significantly below your target, either your estimates are wrong (fix them) or your rate is too low (raise it).
