This list covers paid dictation apps only: the ones people buy by subscription or once. The best Wispr Flow alternative in 2026 is Off Grid AI Pro. It dictates offline on Mac, Windows and Linux, and the same $79.99 key adds meetings on all three, plus six tools no other app here lists, from screen memory to actions you approve.

We make Off Grid AI. Every rival fact below comes from its own pages, checked 30 October 2026.

How we ranked

  1. Works offline. Speech is turned into text on your computer, with no audio sent.
  2. Mac, Windows and Linux. One app across every computer you use.
  3. Price over 3 years.
  4. What else you get for the money. This decides the ranking. All five dictate well, and four do it offline. What differs is what the money buys beyond dictation.

1. Off Grid AI Pro

What it is. Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD) is free and open source (AGPL-3.0) for Mac (Apple silicon), Windows and Linux. Pro adds dictation. Pick a Whisper model, turn on Paste at cursor, choose hold-to-talk or toggle, and set a shortcut. Hold it, speak, let go, and the text lands where your cursor was: email, Slack, your editor. It needs only the speech model, not a large chat model.

What else you get. The same key adds Meetings without a bot, Memory of your screens and documents, Actions you approve, God (your chief of staff), Vault, Clipboard and Sync. One key covers up to 5 devices.

Best for. People who want dictation and the rest of their workday on their own computer, on any OS.

Price. $79.99 once for lifetime access, a limited-time price down from $119, or $7.99 a month.

The catch. Dictation into other apps is desktop only. The phone app has voice input in its own chat. On Linux, the shortcut and paste depend on your desktop session, and Wayland can get in the way. Local speed depends on your computer and the model you pick. Setup guides: Mac, Windows, Linux.

2. Superwhisper

What it is. A polished dictation app with local Whisper models, AI modes to reformat text, and phone apps. Its free plan has unlimited local Whisper dictation. Pro adds cloud models and more.

What else you get. A meeting recorder, on Mac only.

Best for. Mac or Windows users who also dictate on iPhone or Android. Its FAQ says a Pro license works on as many of your devices as you like.

Price. Free plan. Pro is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 lifetime.

The catch. No Linux, and Meetings is Mac only. Lifetime Pro costs about three times Off Grid AI Pro. See Off Grid AI vs Superwhisper.

3. MacWhisper

What it is. A Mac transcription app. It transcribes files, records calls without a bot, and dictates system wide. You can use local models or connect remote ones.

What else you get. Bot-free meeting recording on the Mac.

Best for. Mac users who mainly want transcripts of files and calls, paid once.

Price. Free version. Pro is €64 once.

The catch. Mac only, with a separate iOS and iPad version. See Off Grid AI vs MacWhisper.

4. VoiceInk

What it is. An open-source dictation app for Apple silicon Macs that "processes all voice transcription locally". It has an iOS version.

What else you get. Dictation only. Its pages don't list meetings or other tools.

Best for. Mac users who want dictation alone at the lowest one-time price.

Price. One-time: Solo $25 for 1 Mac, Personal $39 for 2, Extended $49 for 3.

The catch. Mac only on the desktop, macOS 14.4 or later.

5. Wispr Flow

What it is. Fast cloud dictation for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.

What else you get. Quick filler-word cleanup and phone keyboards.

Best for. Phone dictation, if you don't mind the cloud.

Price. Free: 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly.

The catch. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, so it doesn't work offline. It is also the most expensive over 3 years. See Off Grid AI vs Wispr Flow.
