What Qwen3-ASR is
Qwen3-ASR is an open speech-recognition model from Alibaba's Qwen team, released in January 2026 under the Apache 2.0 licence. It comes in two sizes. The 0.6B build is small enough for a phone, and that is the one OGAM runs.
Most offline dictation apps on iPhone use Whisper. Qwen3-ASR is a newer choice that names its language for you, so a bilingual speaker does not need to switch settings.
What you need
- An iPhone with 3 GB of memory or more. OGAM only lists Qwen3-ASR on iPhones that can run it.
- About 1 GB of free storage for the model and its audio file, and Wi-Fi for that one download.
- OGAM 0.0.122 or later, free from the App Store.
Set it up
- Install OGAM from the App Store.
- Open Models, then the Speech tab.
- Find Qwen3-ASR 0.6B, marked "Multilingual - 30 languages", and download it. One progress bar covers both of its files.
- Select it. It becomes the speech model for dictation and voice notes.
That is all. From now on, the microphone in the chat box uses Qwen3-ASR.
Dictate with it
Tap the microphone in any chat, speak, and stop. The text lands in the message box for you to check and send.
Qwen3-ASR detects the language as you speak. To fix one, open the chat's settings and pick it under Language. The list shows all 30 languages Qwen3-ASR knows.
Voice notes work the same way. Record one and OGAM turns it into text on the iPhone.
Qwen3-ASR or Whisper on your iPhone
Both run offline on the iPhone, and both are free. OGAM's Speech tab lists them side by side.
| Qwen3-ASR 0.6B | Whisper | |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | 30, detected for you | Up to 99 in the multilingual builds |
| Download | About 1 GB | 75 MB (Tiny) to about 3 GB (Large v3) |
| iPhones | 3 GB of memory or more | Most iPhones |

Keep a small Whisper model as well if you have room. If Qwen3-ASR cannot transcribe a recording, OGAM says so in one line and Whisper does it instead.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3-ASR is not in the Speech tab | The iPhone has less than 3 GB of memory, or OGAM is older than 0.0.122 | Update OGAM, or use a Whisper model |
| The wrong language comes back | Detection guessed from a short clip | Pick the language under Language |
| A note says Whisper transcribed it | Qwen3-ASR failed on that recording | Nothing to do. The text is there. |
