GPT4All made local AI easy for a lot of people. Its last release, v3.10.0, came out on 25 February 2025. Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD) shipped 12 releases in October 2026 alone. It also makes images, listens and talks back, and has a phone app.

Why the release date matters to you
New open models arrive every few weeks. Each one needs an engine that knows how to load it. When an app stops shipping, its engine stops learning new models, and so does your computer.
OGAD fixed this at the root. Since 0.0.55, its AI engines (llama.cpp, whisper.cpp and stable-diffusion.cpp) update in the background on Mac, Windows and Linux. You don't wait for a full app release to run a model that came out last week. Read how OGAD keeps llama.cpp current.

Your documents, with the source shown
If you used LocalDocs, you'll feel at home. Add files to a Project in OGAD and ask a question in plain words. The answer cites the passage it came from, so you can check it in a click.
The files are read and searched on your machine. The screenshot above shows a cited answer from Qwen 3.5 9B running locally.
Images from the chat window
Ask for a picture the way you ask a question. OGAD runs image models such as RealVisXL V5.0 Lightning on your graphics card, offline. A 1024 by 1024 image takes 6 steps with that model.
You don't need a second app or cloud credits. The picture lands in the conversation that asked for it.
GPT4All's README does not list image generation.
Speak, and hear the answer
Whisper turns your voice into text on your computer. Kokoro reads the answer back. Dictate a draft while you walk around the room, or have a long reply read aloud.
Audio never leaves the machine. It works the same with Wi-Fi off.
Your assistant on your phone too
GPT4All is desktop only. Off Grid AI Mobile (OGAM) runs on iPhone and Android with its own on-device models. With Pro, Sync carries your chats and Projects between computer and phone over your own network.
Away from your desk, OGAM can reach the bigger model on your computer over your home network or VPN.

GPT4All shipped a Python SDK. OGAD gives you a local OpenAI-compatible API at 127.0.0.1:7878, so any OpenAI client library works with one base_url change. The same endpoint serves chat, images and speech. See the local API guide.
