PocketPal runs chat models on your phone. Off Grid AI Mobile (OGAM) does that too, then keeps going. It makes images, answers from your own files with sources, and syncs to an app on your computer.
Both are free and open source, and both run offline. The difference is how much your phone can do once the model is on it.

Checked 29 October 2026 against PocketPal's GitHub README (v1.21.4) and Off Grid AI's release notes. "Not listed" means the feature is not on PocketPal's own pages.
Your phone makes images too
Type what you want to see. OGAM writes a fuller prompt for you, then Stable Diffusion draws it on your phone. No server sees the prompt or the picture.
That matters when the image is personal, like a logo for a business you haven't announced or a picture for your kid's bedtime story. It stays in your camera roll and nowhere else.
PocketPal's README covers chat, character Pals, read-aloud voices and speed benchmarks. Image generation is not on the list. If you want words and pictures from one offline app, OGAM is the one that does both.
Ask your own files and see the source
Drop a PDF, a lease or your notes into a Project. Ask a question in plain words. OGAM answers and cites the passage it used, so you can check the claim in seconds.
The file never leaves the phone, and neither does your question. Use it on a contract before you sign, or on lecture notes the night before an exam.
Document questions are not listed in PocketPal's README.
One assistant on your phone and your computer
PocketPal lives on iOS and Android. Off Grid AI also runs on Mac, Windows and Linux as Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD).
On a computer you get room for bigger models and a GPU for faster images. With Pro, Sync carries your chats and Projects between your devices on your own network. Start a question on the train, finish it at your desk.
Use the big model on your desk, from your phone
A phone can comfortably run a 2B to 4B model. Your computer can run far larger ones. OGAM can connect to a model server on your home network or VPN. You get the big model's answers in the phone's chat.
The traffic stays on your network. Your prompts never go to an AI company.
Which phones run it
- iPhone 12 or newer, or Android with 4GB of RAM: small models such as Qwen 3.5 0.8B.
- iPhone 15 Pro or a flagship Android with 8GB of RAM: Qwen 3.5 4B, the sweet spot for quality.
More RAM means larger models. The app shows which models fit before you download.
Switch in five minutes
- Install OGAM from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the model library and download a model that fits your phone. Qwen 3.5 2B is a good first pick for 6GB to 8GB of RAM.
- Ask it something you'd ask in PocketPal. Then ask for an image.
- Make a Project, add a file and ask a question about it.
You don't need an account at any step.
What Pro adds
Pro is optional. It adds a hands-free voice mode with Kokoro, drafts you approve before anything is sent, and Sync across up to 5 devices. On 29 October 2026 it costs $79.99 once, a limited-time price down from $119, or $7.99 a month. See Pro.
The free app stays free. Chat, images, vision, voice input and Projects never need Pro.
FAQ
Does PocketPal generate images?
PocketPal's own README lists on-device chat, Pals, read-aloud and benchmarks. It does not list image generation. Off Grid AI Mobile generates images on your phone with Stable Diffusion, offline, after a one-time model download.
Can PocketPal answer questions about my documents?
Document questions are not listed in PocketPal's README. In Off Grid AI Mobile you add files to a Project and ask questions. Answers cite the passage they came from, and the files stay on your phone.
Is Off Grid AI free like PocketPal?
Yes. Chat, image generation, vision, voice input and Projects are free, with no account. Pro is optional. It adds voice mode, drafts you approve and Sync with your computer.
Can I use the same GGUF models I use in PocketPal?
Yes. Off Grid AI Mobile runs GGUF models with llama.cpp, the same format PocketPal uses. Qwen, Llama, Gemma and Phi download inside the app.
Does Off Grid AI work in airplane mode?
Yes. Once a model is downloaded, chat, image generation and Projects run on the phone with no connection.
Get it on the App Store or Google Play, download one model, and make your first image offline.
