Omi is a small pendant that listens to your day and turns conversations into summaries and to-dos. It is clever hardware. But it is also a device to buy, charge and wear, and the all-day plan is a subscription. Omi's site lists the pendant at $169, and Pro at $29.99 a month.

Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD) Pro gives you meeting memory on the computer you already own. No wearable, no subscription, no upload. It records your calls and in-room meetings, and local models write the notes.

Where Omi is strong

Omi goes where your laptop doesn't. A walk, a coffee, a lecture, a car ride. It has two microphones, records offline and syncs later, and supports 25+ languages. Omi also takes privacy seriously on paper. Its site says the software and hardware are open source, data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and you can "run Omi locally".

The trade is the plan. The free plan lists 5 hours of cloud recording a month and 30 Ask Omi questions. To "Record your whole workday", Omi sells Pro.

What OGAD does instead

Most work talk happens on a call or at a desk. OGAD covers both without new hardware:

  1. Calls. OGAD sees that a Zoom, Teams or Google Meet call has started. It records two tracks: the call's audio and your microphone. No bot joins.
  2. In-room meetings. Press Record meeting and OGAD uses the microphone. See how to record an in-person meeting on a Mac.

When you stop, a local Whisper model writes the transcript. A local text model writes the summary, the decisions and the follow-ups. There is no monthly hour limit and no question quota, because the models run on your computer.

Memory beyond conversations

Omi remembers what was said. Off Grid AI Pro also remembers what you did:

  • Memory. Screens, meetings, mail and documents in one local memory you can search and ask.
  • God, your chief of staff. A morning brief, meeting prep with last time's notes, and what people owe you.
  • Actions you approve. Replies and issues through Gmail, Linear, Jira and Notion. Nothing runs without your yes.
  • Reflect. Time by project, app and person, without timers.
  • Sync. Your phone and computer in sync, device to device. No server keeps a copy.

When Omi is the better pick

If your important conversations happen away from a computer, Omi is the better tool. OGAD records meetings on a computer, not from a pendant on your shirt. Omi also works with iPhone, Android and the web, and its app connects to your calendar, tasks and AI tools.

If your meetings happen on calls and at a desk, you don't need new hardware. OGAD records them on the machine you already use, and you pay once. Also see how OGAD compares with Granola and our private Rewind alternative.

Start in ten minutes

  1. Download OGAD for Mac, Windows or Linux.
  2. Get Pro and enter your key in the app.
  3. In Models, download a transcription model and a text model.
  4. Allow microphone and screen-audio access.
  5. Join a short test call, or press Record meeting in a room, then open Meetings.

Tell the people around you that you're recording, as you would with any recorder.
