A question for programmers who are self taught and getting paid

Do you guys think that learning about programming from scratch is extremely difficult, but day to day paid programming work is easier? I haven't been paid for any programming work just yet, but it seems programming is one of those professions that you can't just pick it up and go your way, it demands time and respect. What do you all think? I'd love to hear more experienced people's opinions.
