Most people think one dog year equals seven human years. That's wrong — and veterinary science has known it for decades.
I built Animal Calculator Online to fix this. It's a free pet age calculator that covers 22 species using scientific longevity curves, not oversimplified rules.
The problem with the 7-year rule
The multiply-by-7 formula has no scientific basis. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years and then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is already equivalent to a 15-year-old human. By year 2, they're around 24. After that, the rate depends heavily on size and breed.
A small dog of 10 years has 56 human years. A large dog of the same age has 66. That difference matters for their health care, diet and exercise needs.
What the calculator covers
- Dogs (small, medium, large)
- Cats
- Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas
- Budgies, canaries, lovebirds, parrots
- Tortoises, turtles, iguanas, leopard geckos, bearded dragons
- Goldfish, betta fish, guppies, neon tetras
Each species has its own non-linear aging curve based on veterinary and longevity research.
