Is Learning Backend Development Still Worth It in 2026?

I'm a CSE student interested in AI/ML and Generative AI, and lately, I've also started exploring backend development with FastAPI and REST APIs.

I'm wondering whether investing time in backend development is still worth it in 2026, especially with AI tools becoming capable of generating a lot of code.

I understand that building real applications requires more than just writing code, but I'm still figuring out what I should focus on and how deep I should go.

I'd love to hear from people working in backend development or those who have recently started learning it.

Is backend development still a valuable skill to invest in?

What should a beginner focus on first: HTTP, REST APIs, databases, authentication, system design, or something else?

Is building projects while learning the concepts a better approach than following a structured course from start to finish?

For someone interested in AI/ML and GenAI, how much backend knowledge is actually necessary?

I'm not looking for a shortcut. I want to build a solid foundation and avoid spending time learning things in the wrong order.

If you were starting your backend journey today, what approach would you follow?

Any honest suggestions, learning resources, or mistakes to avoid would be appreciated.
