Peace comes to our hearts when we turn to the scriptures and trust the promises of the Savior. They truly hold the keys to protection and redemption. Not long ago, I had the privilege of sealing a young couple in the temple. They had lived worthily to reach that sacred day—pure and clean, ready to begin their life together.
In time, they will raise children, and their happiness, along with the happiness of generations to come, will depend on living the standards set forth by the Savior in His word. Many parents today ask, Is it safe to raise children? Yes—there is. The safest place is a gospel-centered home. That’s why the Church continually emphasizes family and encourages parents to teach their children righteousness.
The Apostle Paul foresaw the times we live in. He wrote that in the last days, “perilous times shall come.
He warned that people would be:
Lovers of themselves and of money
Proud, boastful, unthankful, and unholy
Disobedient to parents
Harsh, deceitful, and without natural affection
Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God
The Scriptures Protect Us
The scriptures are our shield. They contain the teachings, ordinances, and doctrine that bring us to Jesus Christ. They give us strength, direction, and peace. I once asked Elder S. Dilworth Young, “What counsel should I give to a struggling stake?” His reply was simple: Tell them to read the scriptures.
