Keep a List of Things You Don't Understand

Here is a habit that quietly changed how fast I learn.

I keep a running list of things I do not understand yet.

Not a to do list.
A confusion list.

Every time I hit a word, a concept, or a system that I nod along to but could not actually explain, I write it down.

Not to feel bad about the gap.
To make the gap visible.

Because the truth is, most of us walk past our own confusion all day long.

Someone mentions a term in a meeting, we half get it, and we let it slide.
We read a doc, hit a paragraph that does not land, and keep scrolling.

Each little skip feels harmless.

But they pile up into a fog where you sort of know a lot of things and truly understand fewer of them than you think.

The list fixes that.

When you write down I do not really understand how this deploys, you have turned a vague fog into a specific target.

And specific targets are learnable.

Once a week, look at your list and pick one thing.
Just one.
Go understand it properly, until you could explain it to someone else.

Then cross it off and feel that small satisfaction.

Over a year, that is fifty things you now genuinely understand instead of fifty things you kept nodding past.

The people who seem to know everything are not smarter than you.

They just stopped letting their confusions slip away unexamined.

They wrote them down and hunted them one at a time.

Start your list today.

Your first entry is probably something you skipped past an hour ago.
