Learn It Well Enough to Teach It

You do not really know something until you can explain it to someone else.

You can pass a quiz on knowledge you barely hold.
You cannot teach it.

Teaching exposes every gap you were quietly hiding from yourself.

So here is the habit I want you to build.

Whenever you learn something new this week, find a way to explain it to another person within a day.

It does not need to be formal.

Explain it to a teammate over coffee.
Write a short post nobody may read.
Talk it out loud to an empty room if you have to.

The moment you try to put it in your own words, you find the soft spots.

The part where you say and then it just works and realize you have no idea why.
The step you skip because you never actually understood it.

That discomfort is the learning finishing itself.

Most people stop the second the tutorial ends and the code runs.
They confuse the tutorial working with them understanding.

Those are not the same thing.

The tutorial working means the author understood it.
You understanding means you can rebuild it without them.

So close the tutorial and explain it from memory.
Where you stumble is exactly where you need to go back.

This is slower.
It is also the difference between someone who collects courses and someone who actually gets better.

You do not need to learn more things.
You need to learn fewer things all the way through.

Pick one idea this week and teach it to somebody.

You will be surprised how much you did not know you were missing.

And how solid it feels once you do.
