Someone asked me last week what tools we run our team on and I realized I'd never actually written it down anywhere. So here it is, mostly for my own future reference honestly.
We're a small dev shop, 8 people, half remote.
Slack. Yeah. We went through a phase of having like 15 channels and it was a mess, nobody knew where to post anything. Down to 4 now. #general, #eng, #random, and a #wins channel someone set up that's mostly gifs.
Linear for tickets. We were on Jira before I joined and everyone still complains about it occasionally like it's a shared trauma. Linear is fast, that's basically the whole pitch.
Notion for docs, though honestly half our Notion is out of date and nobody's cleaned it up in months. Onboarding doc is solid though, that one gets used.
GitHub + Vercel + Railway for actually shipping stuff. Nothing interesting to say here, it works.
Loom for anything where typing it out would take longer than recording my screen and mumbling for 90 seconds.
Then there's payroll and expense stuff, which nobody thinks about until it's broken. We use GoKlaim for wellness and expense reimbursements; someone submits a receipt from their phone and an admin approves it. Before that we were doing it manually over e-transfer, which worked fine for a while and then very much didn't once we hit a certain headcount.
That's genuinely most of it. Nothing we picked because it looked good on a slide. Most of this stack exists because the previous way of doing something got annoying enough that someone finally fixed it.
