Week 32: Learning From the Students Who Are Already Finding Their Way

One thing we are learning while building BAINT is that we cannot only look for students who are struggling

We also need to learn from students who are already finding ways to understand difficult subjects

That might actually teach us just as much
Recently, we spoke with a Biochemistry student about how she experienced the course when she was in 100 level
We asked a simple question
What made Biochemistry easier for you to understand compared to other students?

Her answer gave us something important to think about
She said one thing that helped her a lot was that she did not depend only on what the lecturers taught

She made sure to research the topics herself to get more clarity

That sounds simple
But there is something deeper inside that answer
The student was not waiting for one explanation to be enough

When the lecture did not provide everything she needed, she looked for another way to understand the topic

She researched
She compared information
She looked for more clarity
She kept learning outside the classroom

That is a learning behaviour we want BAINT to understand better

Students do not all learn from the same place

Some students depend heavily on classroom explanations
Some use textbooks
Some search online
Some watch YouTube videos
Some ask classmates
Some use AI
Some combine several of these approaches
And some students develop their own learning methods over time

The interesting question for us is not simply
"What does a student find difficult?"
We also want to ask
"What does a student who understands well do differently?"
That changes how we think about building BAINT

If a student already knows how to research a difficult concept, BAINT should not simply give them another generic answer

It could help them organise what they find
Break a difficult concept into smaller parts

Compare different explanations
Connect theory to practical examples

Test their understanding
Or help them identify what they still do not understand
The goal is not to replace the student's own learning process
It is to support it

We are also learning from how students ask questions

This has become one of the biggest things we are testing in the BAINT demo

A student might start with a broad question
"Explain biomolecules"
Then ask
"What are their building blocks?"
Then
"What about proteins and enzymes?"
Then
"What about carbohydrates?"
Those questions are not separate questions
They are part of one learning process

The student is moving from the general concept into specific parts and then deeper into the subject

That means BAINT needs to understand the conversation
It needs to know what the student is referring to
It needs to avoid repeating an explanation that has already been given

And it needs to understand when the student is asking for a deeper explanation, an example, an application or a completely different way of understanding the same concept
We recently found this problem while testing the demo with students

At first, some follow-up questions returned almost the same answer

That was a problem
A student should not have to keep changing the wording of a question just to make an AI understand that they are asking about a different part of the topic

So we started working on that
The demo is still early, but these tests are helping us understand what BAINT actually needs to become

We are not only looking for problems

This is an important change in how we are doing our research
We want to learn from students who are struggling

But we also want to learn from students who are doing well

What do they do when they do not understand something?
Where do they search?
How do they know when they finally understand?
Do they learn differently from their classmates?
What habits helped them become better?
What did they wish they had known earlier?
These questions can teach us how students develop their own ways of learning

And that can help us build BAINT around real learning behaviour instead of assumptions

BAINT is still being built
BAINT AI Classroom Assistant is still in the testing and development stage

We are talking to students
Testing the demo
Collecting feedback
Studying how students learn
And changing parts of the product when the feedback shows us that something is not working well enough

We are not trying to pretend that everything works already
There are still many things we need to figure out

That is part of building from the ground up
The more students we talk to, the more we understand that the real challenge is not simply giving students access to information

It is helping them find a way into that information

Sometimes that means a step-by-step explanation
Sometimes it means a practical example
Sometimes it means a visual explanation
Sometimes it means connecting a new concept to something the student already understands
Sometimes it means helping a student research better
And sometimes it simply means listening to the question carefully before answering
We are still looking for hardware support

There is also something practical that would help us move faster

We are still looking for a better laptop or development device for BAINT

Right now, a fairly used laptop would still make a meaningful difference

We are building, testing, researching and updating the demo regularly, and better hardware would help us work faster and test more comfortably

We are not looking for anything fancy
If someone has a fairly used laptop that they no longer need and would be willing to support BAINT with it, we would genuinely appreciate the help

If you know someone who may be able to help, connect us
You can reach us at:
baintcomputer@gmail.com
This is not separate from the work

It is part of the journey
We are trying to keep building with what we have while also being honest about what would help us do better

What comes next
We want to keep speaking with students from different backgrounds

We want to understand both the students who struggle and the students who have developed strong ways of learning

We want to keep testing how BAINT handles real conversations

We want to improve how it understands follow-up questions

We want to explore different ways of explaining the same concept
And most importantly, we want students to continue influencing what we build
Because BAINT should not be built around what we think students need
It should be built around what we learn from them

We are still early
But every conversation gives us something new to think about

Still listening
Still learning
Still connecting
Still building
