This Week in Code, November 14th

In case you missed any of it, here are some of the most noteworthy links from the past week in our industry. The obvious story affecting all us this week was the US election. On Thursday night, a group of us developers in New York City got together to air our feelings on the matter and collectively discuss how concerned citizens who code might be able to step up and work together in times of uncertainty like this.

Here are two writeups from the meetup and photos from the event.

NYC Technologists Ring the Bells That Still Can Ring

Notes from the Tech for Good Meetup

Meetup

Meetup

This was not a one time event. We plan to create resources and community to help motivated tech folks make the best impact they can. If you are in New York and want to keep up with our plans, you can join the Meetup group. If you want to make sure you get wind of future national/international ongoings, following myself (@bendhalpern) or Saron Yitbarek (@saronyitbarek) on Twitter is your best bet for now.

A few links from the rest of the week

Survival Guide for Junior Developers A well-written check list of good practices that is geared towards juniors, but can help any developer, if I do say so.

Mistakes I made (as a developer) One developer's list of things they might have done differently had they had the last ten years back. It is specific and opinionated enough that not everyone will agree with each point, but is good food for thought.

Wind Waker Graphics Analysis A fascinating dive into the graphics of a game that has aged beautifully.

Podcasts

Legacy Code with Andrea Goulet This was a top-to-bottom great listen that goes into the fundamentals of writing good software, and, finding motivation to do so. I have heard Andrea on a few other podcasts and she is always a great guest.

Mad Science, WebTorrent & WebRTC with Feross Aboukhadijeh A really fun and insightful Changelog interview on a number of topics 👌
