When everyone is applying for internships at companies like Microsoft, Google, etc. it's also good to checkout some less known companies, likely smaller, where the chance of actually getting the internship is higher and it may be just as valuable.
Look for smaller firms that will give you more responsibility and a wider variety of tasks. Try to make contact with an existing employee who can give you insight into what they are looking for to help you prepare for interviews. Research your target company, learn their products/features and bring thoughtful questions to the interview.
