A Cool Take on Cybersecurity + AI

Before the holidays, I attended the Canadian Cybersecurity Forum and let me tell you — the star of the show wasn’t a hacker in a hoodie. It was AI.

The keynote speaker dove straight into how AI is reshaping cybersecurity faster than most of us can update our passwords. According to them, modern AI systems can now perform the work of one or two junior pentesters when it comes to analyzing threats, detecting malware, and flagging ransomware attacks. Basically, AI has become that overachieving coworker who finishes the whole team’s tasks before lunch.

But the message wasn’t “AI is taking jobs.” Instead, it was “AI is changing jobs.” Entry level roles in cybersecurity are evolving. Some responsibilities — like Pentester Level 1 and Level 2 tasks — are merging, and new roles are emerging that blend technical skills with something surprisingly human: critical thinking. The speaker emphasized that professionals now need to understand concepts like AI hallucinations to properly assess risks. In other words, you can’t just trust the machine — you need to know when it’s confidently wrong.

I also joined a Microsoft virtual session on Cybersecurity in the Age of AI, where the host highlighted how LLMs and agentic AI can help identify, isolate, and respond to attacks from malicious actors trying to access sensitive client data. a. AI isn’t just reshaping our professional lives — it’s creeping into our personal ones too, hopefully in ways that don’t involve it judging our browser history.

All of this has only deepened my interest in it’s confidently wrong. All of this has only deepened my interest in cybersecurity. It’s a field that’s evolving quickly, full of new challenges, new tools, and new opportunities. I even found an article recently about how AI is affecting in cybersecurity — and let’s just say, the future cybersecurity might look less like a lone wolf hacker and more like a human AI duo with matching hoodies.

Cyberattacks powered by AI might be harder to prevent than traditional ones. I’m really scared of future attacks.😱

Thanks for the like, man! I appreciate the scary‑face emoji. And honestly, the fear is justified. Hackers are getting better at using AI in their attacks, and the pace is accelerating. Meanwhile, cybersecurity analysts have been using AI for years as an assistant to detect anomalies and spot intrusions, but the threat landscape is evolving fast.

What’s really alarming is how skilled attackers are becoming with deepfakes and generative AI. They can imitate the voices of loved ones, clone faces, and create convincing fake scenarios. You hear stories in the news all the time now about hackers using AI in ways that would’ve sounded impossible a few years ago. It’s wild.

We’re entering a global era of AI, and it’s natural to feel uneasy. As AI advances, so will the techniques used by hackers. It really does feel like a high‑stakes chess match, with each side anticipating the other’s next move. The idea of malicious actors using increasingly powerful AI systems—possibly even AGI in the near future—is unsettling. The potential for abuse is real, and it raises serious questions about security, governance, and preparedness.

Hackers will eventually use AI systems that are even more advanced than today’s agentic AI, especially in their attacks. It is a worrying thought!

Ah! Hackers using AGI are too scary.😱 I imagine the battles in the future will be AI vs. AI.

I know the feeling! Thank goodness AGI hasn’t been invented yet. I can already see the risks of an AI vs AI dynamic emerging in the near future, which is why we need strong policies to prevent misuse before the technology matures. We’re slowly beginning to develop AI regulations, but there’s still a long way to go.

AGI will likely appear sooner than many expect—at least, that’s what a lot of recent articles suggest. For now, it really is a “wait‑and‑see” situation. Will AGI create major issues in the near future? Possibly. We won’t truly know until the technology actually exists.

Yes. I really hope AGI will be controlled properly.🙀

I completely agree with you.
