Yes. BeenVerified is legit. It is a real company that has sold background reports since 2007. It publishes its prices, its refund rules and its legal limits. Still, legit does not mean perfect. Reports can be out of date. Trials renew into paid plans. And the law bans some uses.
This guide answers the question with evidence. We quote the official answer page, the pricing FAQ and the legal notices. We add what public reviewers say, with dates. We also answer a common worry: does BeenVerified notify the person being searched? Then we give you a checklist for any lookup site.
We are not affiliated with BeenVerified. BillionVerify is an email verification service. Every BeenVerified fact here comes from its own website, checked in October 2026. For a full overview, read our BeenVerified guide.
Key facts (checked October 2026):
- BeenVerified has operated since 2007 and reports more than 1.5 million subscribers, per its About page.
- BeenVerified is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA, so its reports cannot decide a tenancy, a job or a loan, per its FCRA notice.
- BeenVerified says the people you search are never told about it, per its pricing FAQ.
- BeenVerified's $1 trial lasts 7 days and then bills $32.89 a month until cancelled, per its offers page.
- BeenVerified held a 3.6 TrustScore across 3,240 Trustpilot reviews on October 26, 2026.
- Vinci v. BeenVerified, a 2017 Illinois class action, was dismissed without prejudice by a federal judge that August.
Is BeenVerified Legit? The Short Answer
BeenVerified is legit as a business. It is run by BeenVerified, LLC. For personal research, we consider BeenVerified a legit site. Its limits are clear and public. Its About section says it has "over 1.5 million+ subscribers."
The company answers the question itself on Is BeenVerified legit?. The first line reads: "BeenVerified is a legitimate platform that provides access to public record information."
Screenshot: the official "Is BeenVerified legit?" answer.
That is BeenVerified's own claim, so treat it as one side. The rest of this guide tests it against the records, the billing, the privacy rules and the reviews.
Why people ask "Is BeenVerified legit?"
Most doubts come from three places:
- Surprise charges. A $1 trial turns into a monthly plan.
- Strange messages. Emails and texts claim to come from BeenVerified but don't.
- Personal records online. People find their own address listed and wonder how it got there. Other people simply want to know if the reports are worth the price.
Each one has a clear answer. None of them makes the service a fraud. But each one deserves care.
What BeenVerified Says About Itself
BeenVerified lists four reasons to trust it. Here they are, in its words, with what it means for you.
Data quality
BeenVerified says it "aggregates billions of data points from reputable sources such as public records and government databases." Then comes a caveat: "The accuracy of the data can vary based on the quality and completeness of the underlying sources."
In plain terms, a report is only as good as the records behind it. If a county updates slowly, the report lags too.
Industry experience
"BeenVerified has been in operation since 2007," BeenVerified writes. A long track record matters. Fly-by-night sites rarely last that long.
Compliance
BeenVerified states that it "complies with applicable laws and regulations regarding consumer protection and data privacy." It adds that it takes "privacy and data security seriously."
Screenshot: the Compliance and Positive User Feedback cards.
Positive user feedback
The fourth card reads: "It's essential to consider a range of reviews." It claims BeenVerified "has helped more than 1 million people." We check the reviews ourselves further down.
Is BeenVerified a Scam?
No. BeenVerified is not a scam. A scam takes money and delivers nothing. BeenVerified delivers reports, publishes its terms and handles refunds.
Its FAQ answers "Is BeenVerified a scam?" directly. It calls the service "a legitimate background report service." It points to its years in operation as proof of its reputation.
Screenshot: the "Is BeenVerified a scam?" answer in the official FAQ.
So why do people suspect a BeenVerified scam? Mostly because of billing. A low trial price, then an automatic renewal, can feel like a trap if you missed the terms. That is a billing problem, not fraud. The fix is simple: read the renewal terms first. Before you call BeenVerified a scam, check your billing history.
BeenVerified legit or scam: the evidence
| Question | What the evidence shows | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a real company? | Yes. BeenVerified, LLC, in business since 2007 | About BeenVerified |
| Does it deliver reports? | Yes. Plans cover people, phone, email and address lookups | Pricing |
| Are prices public? | Yes. Two plans and a $1 trial | Pricing and offers |
| Can you get money back? | Yes, reviewed request by request | Refund policy |
| Is BeenVerified safe to pay? | Yes, through the payment methods in its billing FAQ | Billing FAQ |
| Can you cancel anytime? | Yes, five ways | Pricing FAQ |
| Is it a consumer reporting agency? | No | FCRA notice |
So, legit or scam? On this evidence, BeenVerified is legit, with limits you should know. We call BeenVerified a legitimate site for personal research, not for screening.
Where a BeenVerified scam claim usually starts
Most BeenVerified scam claims fall into four groups:
- Trial renewals. The member forgot the trial end date.
- Family purchases. A partner or parent signed up on a shared card.
- App store billing. The plan lives under Apple or Google, not the website.
- Impostors. Someone else used the BeenVerified name.
Only the last one is a real BeenVerified scam, and BeenVerified is not behind it. Calling BeenVerified a scam because of an impostor blames the wrong party.
How to Judge Any Lookup Site
You don't have to take our word, or BeenVerified's. Try these five checks on any site that sells reports about people.
Company details
A legit site names its company, its city and its support line. BeenVerified lists its legal name, a New York base and a toll-free phone line. Support works 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST, Monday to Friday. A site with no company name and no phone is a red flag.
Reviews and ratings
Read independent review sites, not only quotes on the vendor's pages. Read the low ratings, not just the high ones. Note the dates. Recent reviews matter most.
Privacy policy
A legit site explains what it collects about customers. It should also explain how people can remove their own listing. BeenVerified offers an opt-out for people who appear in its results. Our BeenVerified opt out guide walks through it.
FCRA disclosure
A legit site states clearly that it is not covered as a reporting agency. It warns you not to use it for hiring or renting. BeenVerified does this on many pages.
Billing terms
Find the renewal rules before you pay. Check the trial length, the later price and how to cancel. BeenVerified lists all three.
Signs a Lookup Service Is Not a Legit Site
Some sites copy the look of real services. Watch for these warning signs:
- No company name. The footer hides who runs the business.
- No phone line. Support is a web form and nothing else.
- No renewal price. The page shows a trial but hides the later charge.
- Guaranteed results. Any promise of perfect, complete data.
- Odd payment requests. Gift cards, wire transfers or crypto.
- Pressure tactics. Countdown timers and "act now" alerts.
BeenVerified passes these checks. It names its owner, lists a phone line, shows renewal prices and admits its records have gaps. By all of these tests, we'd call BeenVerified a legit site. That is what a legit site looks like.
Is BeenVerified Safe to Use?
Yes. For buyers, BeenVerified is safe in the normal sense. It is a known business. Its billing FAQ lists the payment methods it takes. It has a refund policy. And it keeps searches private.
The main risk is billing, not security.
Renewals
BeenVerified pricing states: "your membership will be automatically renewed to the same term you originally signed up for, until you cancel." If you cancel, you keep access until the paid term ends.
Trials
The offers section lists a "7-Day Trial for Only $1." After the trial, the price shown is $32.89 per month. Cancel before day seven if you only need one search.
Refunds
The refund policy says BeenVerified handles "all refund requests on a case-by-case basis." A refund can need "up to 10 days" to post to your bank. If you paid through the Apple App Store or Google Play, ask Apple or Google instead.
Is BeenVerified safe to use online?
Yes, on the real website. Enter beenverified.com in the address bar. Don't click payment links in unexpected messages. Fake sites and fake messages are the real danger. So, is BeenVerified safe to use online? Yes, on the official site and apps.
Is BeenVerified safe for your own data?
As a customer, you share an email and payment details. That is normal for any subscription. To limit exposure, pay with a card you can lock and keep your login safe. Our BeenVerified login guide explains each sign-in option.
Does BeenVerified Notify the Person You Search?
No. Its pricing FAQ says: "All searches and purchases are confidential - we don't notify anybody that you have looked them up."
Can people see you use BeenVerified?
Not through BeenVerified. The subject gets no alert. They can't view a list of who searched them. Only your own screen, inbox or bank statement could reveal it.
A few practical points:
- Shared devices. Saved reports sit in your account and app. Log out on shared phones.
- Shared cards. A joint card shows the charge.
- Shared inboxes. Receipts and alerts land in your email.
That is how people see you use BeenVerified in daily life. The service itself stays silent.
Does BeenVerified notify the person in the app?
No. The same rule covers the website and every app, on any device.
Does BeenVerified notify the person when you buy a report?
No. Buying a report is also confidential. Nothing in the process alerts the subject.
How Accurate Is BeenVerified?
BeenVerified does not promise perfect accuracy. It says the reverse, in writing. Its footer warns that reports are "not necessarily 100% accurate, complete or up to date." It adds that "some municipalities and jurisdictions are slow to report and digitize their data."
Expect these common gaps:
- Old addresses. People move faster than records update.
- Recycled numbers. A phone line may now belong to someone new.
- Mixed identities. Two people who share a name can merge into a single file.
- Missing court files. Some courts never put records online.
Can you use BeenVerified for legal matters?
No. BeenVerified warns its data "must not be solely relied upon for legal purposes." It calls the service "a tool for gathering preliminary information." For a court case, rely on official records and talk to a lawyer.
Why honesty about accuracy is a good sign
A legit data company admits its limits. A scam promises perfection. BeenVerified's caveats count in its favor. We take the same stance at BillionVerify. We publish no accuracy percentage. We report catch-all addresses as their own category instead of counting them as valid. And an unknown result costs nothing.
BeenVerified Legit or Scam? What Reviewers Say
Independent reviews show the other side of the story. They add real customer voices. Legit or scam? Reviews help you decide.
Trustpilot
On October 26, 2026, BeenVerified's Trustpilot page showed a rating of 3.6 from 3,240 reviews. Trustpilot marks the profile as claimed since September 2023 and on a paid Trustpilot plan.
Trustpilot's AI summary says most reviewers "were somewhat happy with their experience overall." It also notes that reviewers "highlight frustration regarding payment issues, frequently reporting unexpected recurring charges."
That matches the pattern across reviews. Users like the search results. Some dislike the billing surprises.
The official reviews page
The BeenVerified reviews page quotes positive Trustpilot reviews. It describes them as "vetted by a neutral 3rd party." Trustpilot itself adds a different note: "We use technology to protect platform integrity, but we don't fact-check reviews." Read both, and weigh the full spread of ratings.

BBB
The Better Business Bureau keeps a BeenVerified profile too. Check it yourself for the current rating and complaint history. Look at how BeenVerified answers complaints, not only how many there are.
BeenVerified Lawsuits and Regulatory Scrutiny
A lawsuit is not proof that a company did anything wrong. Court records still help you judge a business, because they show how its practices get challenged. Here is what the public filings show.
Vinci v. BeenVerified (2017)
In 2017, Nicole Vinci, an Illinois resident, sued BeenVerified, Inc. in the Circuit Court of Cook County. The company moved the case to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where it ran as No. 17-cv-01447. The court heard it alongside near-identical suits against Intelius, Instant Checkmate and Spokeo.
- The claim. Search engines showed paid ads that dropped a searched-for name into an otherwise generic ad. Vinci said BeenVerified used her name this way without her consent. She sued under the Illinois Right of Publicity Act on behalf of a proposed class of Illinois residents.
- The ruling. On August 29, 2017, Judge Manish S. Shah granted BeenVerified's motion to dismiss. The court found the ads showed only a name, "without any additional context to identify" the plaintiff. The complaints were "dismissed without prejudice," which left room to file an amended complaint.
You can read the court's opinion on govinfo, the U.S. Government Publishing Office's archive of federal court opinions.
Other court records
Lookup sites are frequent defendants, and federal dockets list other suits that name BeenVerified. Full filings and outcomes are not all public, so we do not summarize those cases here. To check the current status of any case, search the court's own records through PACER.
BeenVerified Scam Emails and Texts
Some scam reports are not about BeenVerified at all. They are about fakes that borrow its name.
What fake messages look like
Watch for these signs:
- A sender domain that is not beenverified.com, or one with a small typo.
- A message that says your account is locked and asks for your password.
- A refund offer that asks for gift cards or bank logins.
- A link to a page you did not expect.
- A phone number that differs from the official one.
How to check BeenVerified scam emails and texts
Start with the sender. Our free Is This Email Legit? checker looks at the sending domain, its mail records and the mailbox. It also flags throwaway and role accounts. Want context on who runs an inbox? Our reverse email lookup reads the domain, organisation, mail routing and any public profile, using public signals only.
For texts and calls, check the number itself. Our phone number validator shows whether a number is valid for its country and reports its line type.
Then reach BeenVerified through the contact details on beenverified.com, never the ones inside the message.
BillionVerify's free disposable email checker flags temporary and throwaway sender domains.
Many impostors send from temporary inboxes. Our disposable email checker shows whether an address sits on a throwaway domain.
How to report a BeenVerified scam
If an impostor contacted you, report it. File a complaint with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Forward the fake message to BeenVerified support too, so it knows about the impostor. Then delete the message. Never reply with personal or payment details. A quick complaint helps stop the next BeenVerified scam before it spreads.
Is BeenVerified Legit for VIN Checks?
BeenVerified includes VIN lookups in its membership. As a first screen, BeenVerified is legit for vehicle checks too. It should not be your only source.
Is BeenVerified legit for car buyers?
For car buyers, it is one useful step among several. Add an inspection and a test drive. For official title history, the US Department of Justice runs NMVTIS and lists approved data providers. Run a recall check through the official recall service as well.
So it works for car buyers, but no single source sees everything. That is true of every vehicle history service.
What the Law Says: BeenVerified and the FCRA
This is the most important legal point.
BeenVerified falls outside the Fair Credit Reporting Act rules for consumer reporting agencies. You can read the legal definition in 15 U.S.C. ยง 1681a. BeenVerified's FCRA notice bans these uses:
- Employment: hiring, promotion or retention, including nannies.
- Housing: leasing a home or a commercial space.
- Education: judging someone for a program or scholarship.
- Credit and insurance: deciding eligibility for coverage or loans.
Misuse "violates both our Terms & Conditions and the law, and can lead to possible criminal penalties," BeenVerified warns.
In short, BeenVerified is legit for personal research only. Screening a tenant or a job applicant needs an FCRA-regulated provider. Our BeenVerified background check guide explains the difference.
Is BeenVerified a Legitimate Site? A Quick Checklist
Run through this checklist before you buy any report.
- Go to the source. Open beenverified.com directly.
- Read the plan terms. Note the trial length and the later price.
- Set a reminder. Cancel before the trial ends if one search is enough.
- Know the ban list. No decisions about jobs, homes, loans or coverage.
- Hear from other people. Look at recent ratings, including the low ones.
- Confirm key facts. Match important details against an official record.
- Check every sender. Treat unexpected payment messages as suspect.
If all seven pass, you are using a legitimate site in a legitimate way. A legitimate site earns trust through clear terms, not big claims. Is BeenVerified a legitimate site? Yes, and this checklist shows how to get the most from it. That settles the BeenVerified legit or scam question for most buyers.
Is BeenVerified a legit site compared with others?
Most large lookup services share one model. They sell memberships, pull public records and state that they are not consumer reporting agencies. BeenVerified's FAQ names PeopleLooker and NeighborWho as other options. Compare them on price, cancellation and opt-out, not on promises.
Where Email Verification Fits
Many readers look someone up to send them a message. A lookup may list several addresses. Some still work. Others closed years ago.
A report can't tell you whether an inbox still accepts mail. That is a separate check. BillionVerify tests syntax, the domain, its MX setup and the mailbox itself. It flags catch-all, disposable and role addresses.
You get 20 free credits every day you use your account, up to 600 a month. They never expire. No credit card is needed. A valid or invalid result uses one credit. Unknown results are free. Re-checking within 24 hours is free too. Verify an email with BillionVerify before you send.
