Building VektorSec: Why I Built an Autonomous AI Agent for Penetration Testing

Ever found yourself running the exact same nmap scan, feeding the output to a tool, copy-pasting findings, and repeating the process for hours?

As developers and security enthusiasts, we love automation. But when it comes to penetration testing, most tools are either purely static scanners or script-heavy frameworks that still require manual intervention at every step.

That’s why I built VektorSec—an agentic AI penetration-testing desktop agent designed to automate the repetitive manual loop of security assessments.

💡 The Core Problem: The Manual Loop
In a standard pentesting workflow, the human operator acts as the processing engine:

Run a command on the target/attack box.

Parse through terminal logs and output.

Reason about potential vulnerabilities or open vectors.

Decide the next command to execute.

Repeat.

While tools like Metasploit or Nmap handle execution, the reasoning and decision-making loop between commands remains largely manual.

I asked myself: What if an AI agent could own this execution-reasoning loop independently within a defined scope?

🚀 How VektorSec Works
VektorSec isn't just another vulnerability scanner that spits out generic PDF reports. It acts as an interactive assistant that autonomously drives the attack workflow:

+------------------+ +-------------------+ +------------------+
| Set Target & | --> | Execute Command | --> | Read Terminal |
| Scope Limits | | on Attack Box | | Output & Logs |
+------------------+ +-------------------+ +------------------+
^ |
| +-------------------+ |
+-------------- | Decide Next Step | <-------------+
| & Reason Findings |
+-------------------+
Key Highlights:
Autonomous Execution Loop: Set the target and explicit scope boundaries. The agent executes commands, analyzes raw stdout/stderr output, decides logical next steps, and continues execution.

Self-Contained Portable Architecture: Built with Electron, React, Node.js, and integrated with lightweight local database services (MongoDB & Redis) to keep execution fast and localized.

Client-Side Licensing & Security: Packaged with an offline/online DRM gate to run securely as a native B2B desktop app.

🛠️ The Tech Stack & Challenges
Building an agentic desktop app that safely executes security tooling isn't trivial. Here are a few technical hurdles faced along the way:

Managing State & Execution Logs: Handling streaming output from command execution while ensuring the AI model context doesn't blow up required structured log parsing and state tracking.

Local Database Portability: To avoid forcing users to install system-wide MongoDB or Redis services, VektorSec bundles portable runtimes managed directly by the app lifecycle (resolving runtime dependencies like MSVCP140.dll along the way!).

Packaging Large Binaries: Distributing full-featured desktop tools often hits file size bottlenecks. For version 1.2.4, we even authored custom PowerShell chunking mechanisms to split distribution builds into clean 20MB parts for seamless repository hosting.

🎯 What's Next?
VektorSec is transitioning into its commercial build (Build 1.2.4 Customer Edition), focusing on Red Teams, security consultants, and developers looking to streamline local security testing.

I’d love to hear from the Dev.to community:

How are you currently integrating AI agents into your development or security workflows?

What guardrails do you consider mandatory when letting an AI execute CLI tools autonomously?
