Shipping the code for a small SaaS, CLI, or developer utility is usually the easy part. The part where most solo projects stall is getting the first 50 external backlinks and initial users without spending money on ads.
Over the past few launches, I compiled a clean list of 40 active directories, launchpads, and developer communities that actually drive either referral traffic or high-DR SEO backlinks. I stripped out the dead startup directories from 2018 that never approve submissions and organized the working ones into a single Notion table.
Tier 1: High-DR Technical & Founder Communities (DR 75+)
If you only have two hours to spend on distribution, start here:
- Hacker News (Show HN) (DR 90, Free): Best for developer tools, open-source projects, and technical products with a live demo that requires no signup.
- Product Hunt (DR 91, Free): Still worth doing for the permanent high-DR backlink and secondary scraper sites that automatically copy Product Hunt launches.
- AlternativeTo (DR 84, Free): High-intent search traffic. Submit your tool as an alternative to 3–5 established competitors in your category.
- Indie Hackers Products (DR 80, Free): Good for founder visibility and recurring milestone updates.
- BetaList (DR 74, Free queue / Paid fast-track): Works well for pre-launch or early beta signups.
- G2 / Capterra / SourceForge (DR 90+, Free vendor profiles): Takes 15 minutes to verify ownership, but gives some of the strongest B2B domain authority backlinks available.
Tier 2: Developer & Indie Launchpads (DR 50–74)
These smaller launchpads have much lower competition than Product Hunt, meaning a single submission can easily stay on the front page for a full week:
- DevHunt (DR 64, Free): Specifically for developer tools and APIs.
- OpenAlternative (DR 63, Free): If your project is open-source or has an open-core repo.
- SaaSHub (DR 71, Free): Automated comparison pages that rank well for "X vs Y" searches on Google.
- Uneed / Microlaunch / Fazier / Peerlist Spotlight: Active indie maker launchpads where daily winners get featured in their weekly newsletters.
Tier 3: AI-Specific Directories (If Your Tool Uses LLMs)
- There's An AI For That (DR 79)
- Futurepedia (DR 76)
- Toolify.ai (DR 72)
- Ben's Bites Directory (DR 71)
Duplicate the Full 40-Site Notion Database (With Direct Submit URLs)
Instead of keeping bookmarks across 40 tabs, I put all 40 verified sites into a Notion database with columns for Domain Rating (DR), Category, Pricing Model (Free vs. Paid), Direct Submission URL, and a Submission Status Tracker so you can check them off as you go.
