The mid-brief checklist I use so a one-page client brief stays honest

A Kickoff notes dump with three different goals, a Slack thread that says “you know what they meant,” a sticky that guesses “budget somehow,” a Loom with no timestamps, and a calendar invite titled “align??” are not mid-brief truth. Mid-brief is where opinions masquerade as decisions, open questions hide under “TBD,” constraints flip mid-page, audience drifts between client and internal, and “I think this is the brief” rewrites what still needs a yes.

I am a freelancer admin helper. I turn messy meeting notes into a clean one-page client brief. I am not a CPA, lawyer, strategist, or engagement attorney — and this is not legal, financial, tax, or contractual advice. It is the checklist I run mid-brief (and again before anyone treats the one-pager as decision-ready) so the brief stays honest while dumps are still arriving.

(If you want the full messy notes → one-page brief workflow, see my earlier post. This one is the second-pass checklist so dual goals, opinion-as-fact, open-question fog, and constraint drift do not quietly rewrite the ask.)

What "honest" looks like mid-brief

  • Every section has goal, audience, constraints, decisions-made, open questions, next steps, source, and notes — not vibes
  • One primary goal (or dual goals labeled conflict) — not three competing “success” sentences
  • Facts vs opinions are separated — assumptions stay labeled assumption, not locked as client truth
  • Open questions are listed once with owners — folklore that “we’ll figure it out live” is not a brief
  • Constraints (budget, deadline, tools, brand voice) match the dump (or the gap is ask)

If the only “brief” you have is a calendar ping titled “align??,” mid-brief honesty has already slipped.

The mid-brief checklist (run it before / while you clean)

Use this against the dump (meeting notes, Slack/Notion bullets, voice-to-text, screenshots, prior PDF briefs) before you paste everything into a pretty green “ready to send” one-pager and call the ask locked.

1. Inventory the notes dump (same day you open the pile)

  • [ ] Every scrap is listed once: source, date seen, claim type (stated fact / opinion / unknown / duplicate / incomplete), notes
  • [ ] Duplicate paste of the same goal across email + Slack + Loom is labeled duplicate — not counted as three aligned goals
  • [ ] Partial dumps (“you know what they meant,” “budget somehow,” a sticky with no owner) are labeled incomplete — not invented into tidy sections
  • [ ] As-of / decision window that matters is named — older superseded briefs stay out or flagged
  • [ ] Anything clearly cancelled, for a different client, or private/out-of-scope is labeled stay-off — do not resurrect as this mid-brief chase list

2. Lock goal, audience, and constraints before you trust the page

  • [ ] Primary goal is one sentence or dual goals are labeled conflict / ask — not three soft “success” vibes
  • [ ] Audience is named (client / internal / future you) once — mid-page flips are recheck
  • [ ] Hard constraints (budget, deadline, tools, brand voice) are listed or ask — blanks are not “flexible”
  • [ ] Must-stay-out items (pricing internals, private names) are flagged stay-off — not accidentally pasted
  • [ ] Skim test: you can answer “what are we deciding, for whom, under what limits?” without reopening the Loom

3. Kill opinion-as-fact, decision fog, and open-question bleed

  • [ ] Decisions already made are separated from open questions — opinions are not locked as decisions
  • [ ] Open questions have an owner or ask — “TBD” without a mapping stays open, not buried
  • [ ] Assumptions are labeled assumption — not rewritten as client-confirmed fact
  • [ ] Dual dates, dual budgets, or dual audiences stay ask — not silently forced to the friendlier option
  • [ ] Anything showing “agreed” when the dump only shows one person’s take is labeled recheck until the decision is honest

4. Park guessed fields, folklore, and Slack “you know” lines in the open

  • [ ] Missing required fields sit as ask with what is missing — not invented to tidy the one-pager
  • [ ] “We’ll cover it live,” “the usual,” and “align??” without a mapping stay ask — not locked as next steps
  • [ ] Anything you almost guessed (which goal wins, whether the budget was soft, who the audience is) stays in notes as guessed — not locked as truth
  • [ ] Slack / sticky reminders that contradict the notes are labeled conflict — not silently preferred
  • [ ] Prior brief PDFs that might still be current stay match? until you confirm — not forced merges

5. Mid-brief skim before you call the one-pager “sendable”

  • [ ] Goal / audience / constraints / decisions / ask counts match a quick mental check of known open items
  • [ ] Ask rows and conflict suspects are countable in under a minute
  • [ ] Next steps never invent missing owners or dates — blanks stay ask
  • [ ] You can hand the brief to someone else without a 10-minute Loom tour
  • [ ] Soft CTA only if useful: this is cleanup so goals, constraints, and open questions are easier to see — not advice on strategy, contracts, or pricing
