Who this exam fits
The name tells you the target: people who administer FortiGate firewalls running FortiOS 7.4. That usually means network or security admins, MSP engineers and anyone who manages a FortiGate day to day.
If you have never logged in to a FortiGate, start smaller. See our NSE 3 FortiGate Operator exam guide.
A real 7.4.13 upgrade shows what admins must know
A good admin exam rewards people who can fix things after a change. A recent Fortinet Community thread is a useful worked example. These are user reports, not a Fortinet advisory.
On Oct 23, 2026, a user reported that after upgrading to 7.4.13, many APs no longer connected to the firewall. Other users added details:
- One user ran a 200F in HA with FAP431F and FAP441 access points. Restarting the FortiSwitch 148F-FPOE switches (v7.6.8 build1164) brought the offline APs back. The APs ran v7.4.7 build0802.
- Another user upgraded from 7.4.12 to 7.4.13 and saw the primary role move to the secondary unit. The FortiGate could ping FAP-221E and FAP-231K access points, but the GUI showed them Offline. After rebooting the secondary, the primary role returned and all APs came online.
- A third user, with about 250 APs (models 231G, 431G, 432G and 231K) behind a 400F HA pair, reported no noticeable issues overall. The APs flip-flopped for about 10 minutes, which the user assumed was CAPWAP re-negotiating. After a reboot, about 80 showed offline and recovered within 15 minutes. Clients were slow to rejoin.
- A fourth user said that on an earlier upgrade to 7.4.12, APs returned to Online in less than a minute. To them, a 15-minute recovery suggested a real issue.
So experiences differed. Notice the skills involved: HA roles, CAPWAP behavior, firmware versions on each device and a clean way to compare before and after. Those are the habits to build in your lab.
Commands to practice until they are automatic
The thread only mentions ping and the GUI status. The commands below are our lab practice suggestions, and nobody in the thread used them. Run them on a lab FortiGate, ideally a virtual one with a FortiAP or a simulated setup. Learn what healthy output looks like first.
get system status
get system ha status
get wireless-controller wtp-status
diagnose wireless-controller wlac -c wtp
execute ping <ap-ip-address>
What each one tells you:
-
get system statusshows the FortiOS version and build. Record it before and after any upgrade. -
get system ha statusshows which unit is primary and whether the cluster is in sync. -
get wireless-controller wtp-statuslists managed APs and their state. -
diagnose wireless-controller wlac -c wtpshows the controller's view of each AP. -
execute pingproves basic reachability. In the thread, ping worked while the GUI still showed Offline, so ping alone is not proof of health.
A simple pre-upgrade checklist
- Save the config backup and note the current
get system statusoutput. - Write down the HA primary and secondary serial numbers.
- List your AP models and their firmware versions.
- List the switch models and firmware versions between the FortiGate and the APs.
- After the upgrade, compare the same outputs. Allow some time for APs to return, since one user saw about 15 minutes, but note that another user's APs came back in under a minute on 7.4.12. If recovery is much slower than before, treat it as a possible issue.
A six-week study plan with weekly hours
This plan assumes you already know basic networking. Adjust the hours to your experience. It is our suggestion, not a Fortinet requirement.
| Week | Hours | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 | Build a lab. Learn the GUI and CLI layout, interfaces, zones and routing basics |
| 2 | 6 | Firewall policies, NAT and logging. Break a policy on purpose and fix it |
| 3 | 6 | Security profiles, web filtering and inspection modes |
| 4 | 6 | VPNs and user authentication. Practice reading VPN debug output |
| 5 | 6 | HA, firmware upgrades and wireless or switch management |
| 6 | 5 | Timed review, weak-spot labs and a final read of Fortinet's official exam outline |
That totals about 35 hours. If you work with FortiGate daily, you may need less. If you have only used the GUI, add time for the CLI.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading without a lab. Administrator exams reward people who have clicked through the real product.
- Skipping the CLI. Many troubleshooting tasks are faster there, and the GUI hides detail.
- Studying the wrong version. The exam name says 7.4. Menus and defaults differ between releases, so practice on 7.4.
- Trusting one signal. As the upgrade thread shows, a successful ping did not mean the AP was healthy.
- Ignoring dependencies. An offline AP can be a switch, PoE, HA or CAPWAP issue, not only an AP issue.
- Booking before you check the outline. Read Fortinet's official exam page for the current format and topics first.
