30+ Free REST APIs You Can Call Without an API Key in 2026 (No Credit Card, Zero-Auth)

Every developer has been there: you get inspired to build a weekend project, a portfolio app, or test out a new frontend framework like Next.js 15, React, or Vue.

You search for free public APIs, find a promising service, click the link, and immediately hit problems:

  • Mandatory account creation and email verification.
  • A free trial that requires a credit card upfront.
  • Obscure token headers or complicated OAuth flows before you can even see a sample JSON payload.
  • CORS errors crashing your localhost prototype.

To solve this friction, I put together a tested list of completely free, zero-authentication (Zero-Auth) REST APIs. You do not need an API key, an account, or a payment method. You can copy-paste the URL into your terminal with curl or fetch it directly in your browser console to get instant JSON data right now.

  1. Weather and Geocoding APIs

Open-Meteo
Open-Meteo is by far the cleanest open-source weather API available. It provides high-resolution hourly weather forecasts, historical data, and marine forecasts with zero API key required for non-commercial use.

REST Countries
The ultimate dataset for country information: flags, currencies, languages, borders, population, and capital cities. Perfect for dropdown menus, country quizzes, and travel dashboards.

IP-API (ipapico)
Need to detect user location, timezone, or ISP without third-party SDKs? IP-API returns instant JSON geolocation data based on the caller's IP address.

  1. Finance, Currency and Cryptocurrency

CoinPaprika
Unlike CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko which require developer signups and restricted API keys, CoinPaprika allows direct, keyless queries for live cryptocurrency prices, volume, and market tickers.

Frankfurter Exchange Rates
An open-source, keyless API tracking reference exchange rates published by the European Central Bank. Includes currency conversions and historical time-series data.

  1. Entertainment, Gaming and Fun

PokeAPI
The gold standard for educational and portfolio apps. Highly detailed REST endpoints covering Pokemon stats, sprites, moves, and abilities.

Open Trivia Database
A completely public database of multiple-choice trivia questions across science, history, video games, and pop culture. Ideal for building a live quiz game.

Cat Facts and Dog CEO
Lightweight endpoints delivering random facts and high-resolution animal pictures. Perfect for testing component image layouts or loading states.

  1. AI and Generative Media

Pollinations AI
Generate images on the fly via URL prompts without registering for OpenAI or Midjourney.

  1. Public Knowledge and Data

Nobel Prize API
Official linked data for all Nobel Prizes and Laureates since 1901. Includes affiliations, birthplaces, and citations.

World Universities API
A searchable directory of worldwide universities, domains, and country codes.

How to Bypass Localhost CORS Errors

When building frontend applications with React, Vue, or Next.js Client Components, calling external third-party endpoints often triggers browser CORS errors:
"Access to fetch has been blocked by CORS policy: No Access-Control-Allow-Origin header is present on the requested resource."

If an upstream public API has not enabled CORS headers for browser fetch, you do not need to build a custom backend just to test it. You can route your test request through the FreeAPI Edge CORS Gateway:

Simply prepend the gateway URL:
https://findfreeapi.com/api/v1/gateway?url=YOUR_ENCODED_ENDPOINT
It acts as a zero-latency edge reverse proxy that automatically attaches the required Access-Control-Allow-Origin header for your frontend prototyping.
