Castov: Designing a Local-First AI Agent OS for Desktop Automation

Building local AI agents that interact seamlessly with native desktop GUIs presents a unique set of challenges—from optimizing inference speeds to handling screen recognition and system automation without cloud dependencies.

The Architecture Behind Castov

Castov : is engineered around a local-first philosophy. Instead of routing actions through remote cloud servers, Castov processes task intent and UI interactions directly on the host machine.

Core Focus Areas:
Desktop GUI Control:Precise interaction with native Windows UI elements.
Local Inference:Harnessing lightweight, on-device AI models for fast decision-making.
Deterministic Workflows:Combining autonomous LLM reasoning with strict execution logic to prevent hallucination errors in automation.

python
# Concept: Local Execution Loop
def execute_agent_step(task, context):
    action = castov_engine.plan_next_action(task, context)
    if action.is_safe():
        castov_engine.perform_gui_action(action)
    return context.update()

The local-first boundary is compelling, but the differentiator will be the evidence trail around GUI actions. A deterministic workflow should persist the observed UI state, the chosen action, and the post-action check; otherwise “safe” is just a property of the plan, not proof that the desktop ended up in the intended state.

Spot on, Alex!
You nailed one of the biggest challenges in GUI automation. A purely speculative plan isn't enough when controlling desktop UI—you need continuous state verification.
In Castov, we address this by coupling action execution with post-action observation loops (capturing the updated UI state and validating visual/DOM elements before moving to the next step in the graph). Logging this evidence trail locally is key not just for safety, but for debugging deterministic workflows.
Appreciate the insightful feedback!
