How I Built an AI That Turns WhatsApp Group Chats Into Comic Stories
You know that group chat where your mate said something absolutely unhinged at 2am? What if you could turn it into an illustrated comic?
That's exactly what Chat Comics does. Upload a WhatsApp chat export, pick a mood, and AI generates a fully illustrated comic story — complete with character avatars, facial expressions, scene illustrations, and dramatic narration.
The Tech Stack
- Frontend: React 19, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Netlify Functions (serverless)
- Database: Turso (serverless SQLite)
- AI: Claude for story generation, Gemini for image generation
- Worker: Node.js on EC2 with PM2
How It Works
- Upload: Export your WhatsApp chat as a .txt or .zip file
- Choose a Mood: Pick from 12 options — funny, dramatic, roast, wholesome, horror, romance, detective, action, sci-fi, documentary, motivational, or chaotic
- AI Magic: Claude analyses the chat, identifies key moments, and weaves them into a narrative story
- Character Art: Each person gets a unique avatar with 10 different facial expressions
- The Result: A multi-panel comic story with prose narration, direct quotes, and scene illustrations
Privacy First
The biggest concern with a product like this is privacy. People's chat messages are deeply personal. So we built privacy into the architecture:
- Chat text is encrypted in transit and at rest
- All data is automatically deleted after processing
- No messages are stored, logged, or used for training
- The tagline says it all: Your chat. Your comic. Data deleted.
12 Moods, 12 Different Stories
The mood system is what makes Chat Comics unique. The same chat can produce wildly different stories:
- Funny: Amplifies the comedy, turns awkward moments into punchlines
- Dramatic: Soap opera energy, everything is life or death
- Roast: Brutal honesty, calls everyone out
- Wholesome: Finds the heartwarming moments
- Horror: Turns mundane messages into something sinister
Each mood completely transforms the narrative voice, pacing, and which messages get highlighted.

Would love to hear what you think — especially if you have a legendary group chat that needs the comic treatment.
