What Is an AI Agent for Windows? A Plain-English Guide (2026)

Originally published on the Deskwisp blog.

An AI agent for Windows is software you run from your Windows PC that does a task for you instead of only answering a question. It opens websites and apps, types, clicks, fills forms, and reports back when the work is done.

Full disclosure: I'm Ossama, the founder of Deskwisp, an AI agent app for Windows. I'll explain the category first and keep the plug to the end.

Chatbot vs AI agent

A chatbot gives you a reply to copy and paste. An AI agent takes the next step: it goes to the site, does the research, fills in the sheet, drafts the email, and tells you when it's finished. The question changes from "what should I write?" to "is this done?".

Where the agent actually works

There are two ways an agent can work. Some agents take over your own screen and mouse, which means you can't use your PC while they work. Others work on a separate cloud computer and show you what they're doing, so your PC stays free. If you plan to give an agent real work, the second kind is easier to live with.

Five things to check before you trust an agent

Approval before anything important. Looking things up can happen straight away, but sending, buying and deleting should wait for your OK.

You can watch and take over. You should be able to see every screen it uses and grab control at any moment.

Memory. A useful agent remembers your customers, your prices and how you like things done, so you don't repeat yourself.

Where you can reach it. Chat is the minimum. Voice, email and messaging apps make it fit into your day.

Clear limits on cost. Look for a plan that tells you how much AI use and computer time you get each month.

Good first tasks to hand off

Research: compare prices, check three competitors, collect facts into one page.

Leads: find businesses that fit, check their websites, put the details in a sheet.

Inbox: sort new mail, flag what needs you, draft the routine replies.

Admin: payment reminders, forms, updating a CRM or a spreadsheet.

Planning: plan a trip or an event and stop before paying.

Start with one task you do every week and already know well. That way you can judge the result in minutes.

What agents still get wrong

AI makes mistakes. Agents can misread a page, pick the wrong item, or write something you'd never send. That's why approval before sending, buying or deleting matters more than any feature list. Check the work, especially anything legal, financial or customer-facing.

Where Deskwisp fits

Deskwisp is a Windows app that gives you a team of AI agents. Each agent works on its own cloud computer with up to 4 screens that you can watch live and take over. Agents can have a work email address and a voice you can call, they remember your business, and they ask before they send, buy or delete anything. You can reach them in the app, by voice, or on Telegram, Discord, Slack, email, text and iMessage.

There's a free plan ($0, with $1 of AI credit and 10 computer hours a month), Pro at $29 a month and Max at $199 a month. Get it on deskwisp.com or the Microsoft Store.

If you try it, tell me the first task you gave it in the comments. I read every reply.
