I made a site that asked the question: “What if twitter was made in the early 90's?” The result was char.social. Char is a text only micro-blogging site, hence the name “char” (short for character).
Some basics about the site:
- Text only. Not even links to external sites. If you want to show something use ASCII art (full unicode support).
- No notifications. I believe notifications on sites like Twitter, Instagram, reddit, etc… have become maliciously designed to increase app time.
- No algorithms. Posts can be sorted chronologically or by most likes. I do not want char to become another source of rage bait and doom scrolling.
- No email or personal info for sign up. I do not want your email or personal info.
- We do not harvest any user data.
- Lightweight web app only.
- Posts are not deleted unless we are legally compelled.
- char.social is just for fun. Nothing there should be taken seriously.
