Every week, nearly a billion people use tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity to research products. Most of them never click through to a traditional website link. They ask for recommendations, get an answer, and make a decision right there.
If your brand isn’t in that generated answer, you’re completely invisible.
This is the shift from SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). But there was a massive problem: there was no developer-friendly, indie-priced way to actually track how these AI models talk about your brand daily.
So, we built CitedSpy.
🚀 What is CitedSpy?
CitedSpy is an AI visibility tracker made to help teams monitor, analyze, and optimize how they are recommended across 6 major AI engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, and Grok.
Instead of manually typing prompts into different interfaces every Friday, CitedSpy automates the entire workflow:
- Daily Tracking: AI gives different answers every time. We check every prompt 7 times a week per engine to give you an accurate, aggregate visibility score.
- Share of Voice: Side-by-side comparison charts against up to 15 competitors.
- Source Tracking: See exactly which websites (Wikipedia, Reddit, G2, Product Hunt) the AI models are fetching data from to recommend you.
- Actionable Fixes: It doesn't just show data; it gives you concrete tasks (e.g., "Reply to this specific Reddit thread where your competitor has 18 mentions and you have 2").
🛠️ The Tech Stack Behind It
Building a platform that reliably queries multiple LLMs at scale every single day requires a robust, snappy architecture. Here’s a peek under the hood:
- Backend & Orchestration: Built using Node.js and Express, managing automated background workers to handle concurrent engine queries without hitting rate limits.
- Database Layer: Powered by MongoDB to handle structured analytics data, historical brand sentiment, and complex competitor benchmarking sets.
- Frontend Dashboard: A highly interactive React application designed to let users paste their domain and see their share-of-voice donut charts and source tracking tables in under 60 seconds.

GEO tracking feels useful when it is treated as evidence collection, not a new ranking vanity metric. The important part is which sources the model trusted and whether the business can improve those sources.
