Here's a detail most people skim past in the official exam guide: of the five standard VMware blueprint sections, four have no testable objectives at all on the 3V0-11.26 exam. Every one of the 60 objectives sits in Section 4, "Install, Configure, Administrate the VMware Solution."
That one fact should change how you study. The Advanced VMware Cloud Foundation 9 Administrator exam doesn't test whether you can recite architecture diagrams. It tests whether you can do the job: deploy a stretched vSAN cluster, stand up a Supervisor, build an NSX Tier-0 gateway, and fix config drift in VCF Operations.
This post is a practical, lab-first study plan for the VCAP-VCF Administrator certification, built straight from the official Broadcom exam guide (last updated August 18, 2026).

What Is the 3V0-11.26 Exam, and Who Is It For?
The 3V0-11.26 exam leads to the VCAP-VCF Administrator certification, an advanced-level credential for people who run VMware Cloud Foundation 9 private clouds day to day. It sits above the VCP level and focuses on operating, scaling, and maintaining VCF in multi-region and multi-organization setups.
Broadcom's "minimally acceptable candidate" description is worth reading slowly. The candidate should be able to manage vCenter, ESX, vSAN, NSX, VCF Identity Broker, VCF Automation, VCF Operations (including Logs, Fleet Management, and Networks), and the vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS).
That's a wide stack. In practice, it describes a platform engineer or senior VMware administrator, not someone who only looks after vSphere.
The exam launched as one of three new role-based VCAP certifications for VCF 9, alongside the Architect (3V0-12.26) and Support (3V0-13.26) exams. If you're weighing the design track instead, I covered the architect path in 5 myths about the VCP-VCF Architect certification.
What Are the 3V0-11.26 Exam Details?
The exam has 60 items, a 135-minute appointment, a scaled passing score of 300, and a USD 250 fee, delivered through Pearson VUE.
Here's the full picture:
| Detail | 3V0-11.26 |
|---|---|
| Certification | VMware Certified Advanced Professional – VCF Administrator |
| Exam name | Advanced VMware Cloud Foundation 9 Administrator |
| Items | 60 |
| Appointment time | 135 minutes |
| Passing score | 300 (scaled, out of 500) |
| Price | USD 250 |
| Delivery | Proctored, Pearson VUE |
| Product version | VMware Cloud Foundation 9 |
The 135 minutes already include extra time for non-native English speakers. That works out to about 2 minutes 15 seconds per item, which is generous if you've practised and tight if you're reasoning through each task from scratch.
It is not a multiple-choice-only exam
This trips people up. The official guide lists seven item types: multiple-choice, multiple-selection multiple-choice, build-list, matching, drag-and-drop, point-and-click, and hot-area.
Build-list and point-and-click items reward people who have actually clicked through the VCF Operations console or the Provider Management portal. If you've only read about a workflow, putting its steps in order under time pressure is much harder.
Do You Need a VCP Before Taking VCAP-VCF Administrator?
No. There is no prerequisite certification for 3V0-11.26. You can book it directly.
Eric Sloof, founder of NTPRO.NL, summed up the VCF 9 VCAP lineup plainly: "All eight exams are independent. There is no prerequisite chain between the pillar exams and the role-based exams."
That said, "no prerequisite" doesn't mean "no experience needed." The objectives assume you already know VCF well enough to work on it. If you've never deployed a workload domain, start there before booking.
How Is the 3V0-11.26 Blueprint Structured?
All 60 objectives fall under Section 4, and they group naturally into six areas of the VCF stack. Sections 1, 2, 3, and 5 are marked "no testable objectives this section."
Broadcom doesn't publish weightings, but you can estimate emphasis by counting objectives in each area:
| Area | Objectives | Count | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| vSAN and storage | 4.1–4.9 | 9 | vSAN clusters, stretched clusters, non-vSAN storage, cross-cluster capacity sharing, encryption, data protection, storage policies |
| vSphere compute, performance and security | 4.10–4.18 | 9 | Advanced settings, VM management, CPU/memory/vCenter tuning, monitoring, access control, VM encryption, Trusted Environments |
| VCF Automation (provider and org) | 4.19–4.29 | 11 | Provider Management portal, identity providers, content libraries, Organizations, Provider Consumption Organization, projects, governance policies, namespace classes, VPCs |
| Supervisor and VKS | 4.30–4.34 | 5 | Supervisor with NSX VPC/segment/vDS/Avi, add-on services like Harbor, VKS rolling updates, registries, Supervisor upgrades |
| VCF Operations and fleet | 4.35–4.47 | 13 | Day 2 tasks, reclamation, rightsizing, what-if forecasting, cost management, policies, intents, alerts, fleet lifecycle, SSO, config drift |
| NSX | 4.48–4.60 | 13 | Federation, Edge clusters, Tier-0/Tier-1, VRF, segments, VPC, DHCP, NAT, projects and tenancy, backup/restore |
VCF Operations and NSX together account for 26 of 60 objectives, about 43%. If you come from a pure compute background, that's where your gaps probably are.
Bart Peeters, a vExpert who writes at Broad-Cloud.NL, took the beta and noticed the same thing: "For me, it was really good to see that NSX is covered. Advanced networking absolutely should be a core part of a VCF platform exam."
What Does a Lab-First Study Plan for 3V0-11.26 Look Like?
Split your prep into four phases: map the blueprint, build a lab, work through the objectives by area, then drill timing. Six to eight weeks is realistic for an experienced VCF admin. Plan for longer if NSX or VCF Automation is new to you.
Phase 1 (Week 1): Turn the blueprint into a tracker
Copy all 60 objectives into a spreadsheet or a Markdown checklist. Add three columns: Done in lab, Can explain it, Confident under time pressure.
Almost every objective starts with "Given a scenario." For each one, write a one-line scenario you'd expect to face. For example: "Given a scenario, configure vSAN Encryption" becomes "Enable data-at-rest encryption on an existing workload domain cluster with a native key provider."
Phase 2 (Week 1–2): Get a VCF 9 lab you can break
You need hands-on time, and you need to be able to break things without consequences. Options include:
- VMware Hands-on Labs for guided VCF scenarios without owning hardware
- A nested VCF 9 lab on a capable home server if you have the resources
- Work non-production environments, with permission, for Day 2 operations practice
Don't aim for a perfect lab. Aim for one where you can repeat the same task three times.
Phase 3 (Weeks 2–6): Work through the six areas
Go area by area, in this order. It follows how the objectives depend on each other.
- vSAN and storage first. Workload domains and storage policies underpin everything else. Practise stretched-cluster Day 2 tasks until the witness and fault-domain logic feels routine.
- vSphere performance and security. Focus on CPU and memory optimisation scenarios and on vSphere Trusted Environments, which many admins have never set up.
- NSX. Build a Tier-0, then a Tier-1, then segments, then a VPC. Configure DHCP and NAT on your own. Practise NSX backup and restore. It's the kind of task that becomes a point-and-click item.
- Supervisor and VKS. Enable a Supervisor, install add-on services like Harbor, and run a VKS rolling update.
- VCF Automation. Create an Organization, set up identity providers, then projects, governance policies, and namespace classes. The provider and organization split is new ground for many vSphere admins.
- VCF Operations. Build a policy, configure an alert, run a what-if capacity scenario, set up cost management, and set a config-drift baseline. Learn the difference between Business Intent and Operational Intent, which is objective 4.41.
Phase 4 (Weeks 7–8): Timing and weak spots
Take timed practice sets at roughly 2 minutes per item. Every time you miss something, go back to the lab rather than rereading notes. Then re-mark your tracker honestly.
Which Official Resources Should You Use?
Start with Broadcom's six recommended courses and the three reference sources the exam writers use.
The exam guide recommends:
- VMware Cloud Foundation Storage: Advanced Configuration
- VMware Cloud Foundation Automation: Advanced Configuration
- VMware Cloud Foundation Operation: Advanced Configuration
- VMware Cloud Foundation Networking: Advanced Configuration
- VMware Cloud Foundation Compute: Advanced Configuration
- vSphere Kubernetes Service: Advanced Configuration
Item writers also draw on VMware's private cloud topic pages, Broadcom TechDocs, and broadcom.com. The guide adds a line worth taking seriously: review all release notes and material for features and functions. VCF 9 release notes are fair game.
This short from the VMExam channel covers three things that catch candidates out on this exam:
Is the VCAP-VCF Administrator Certification Worth It in 2026?
For VMware professionals staying on the private cloud path, yes. Demand for VCF skills is tied to a real shift toward private cloud.
Broadcom's Private Cloud Outlook 2025, which surveyed 1,800 senior IT leaders, found that:
- 53% say private cloud is their top priority for deploying new workloads over the next three years
- 69% are considering moving workloads back from public to private cloud, and 35% already have
- 92% trust private cloud for their security and compliance needs
Keep in mind that the report was produced with Broadcom, which sells VCF, so read it as a vendor view. Still, the direction matches what many VMware teams see.
On salaries, ZipRecruiter puts the average US VMware Administrator pay at about $107,214 per year as of September 2026. An advanced VCF credential is one way to show you can handle the full stack, not just vSphere.
It also fits the wider VMware credential ladder. If you plan to go on to architecture, my post on the 2V0-13.25 architect exam covers the design side.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid on 3V0-11.26?
The biggest mistakes are treating it as a theory exam, skipping NSX and VCF Automation, and studying from pre-VCF 9 material.
- Studying VCF 5.x content. The exam targets VCF 9. Provider and Organization structures, VCF Identity Broker, and Fleet Management work differently in older guides.
- Ignoring the "scenario" wording. Every objective asks what you'd do in a specific situation. Practise choosing between options, not just defining terms.
- Underestimating VCF Operations. Thirteen objectives cover it, including cost settings and intents, features many admins never touch at work.
- Relying on dumps. Beyond breaking Broadcom's exam policies, memorised answers fall apart on build-list and point-and-click items.
Bart Peeters described the beta questions this way: "Personally, I found the questions fair—not too difficult, but definitely good and appropriate for a VCAP-level exam." Fair, in this case, means that preparing properly is rewarded.
