The Engineer Has Become an Operator of an LLM

I am going through interviews right now, and one phrase surprised me a lot. It touched me, it cheered me up, and it upset me.

One of the hardest interviews you go through when you get hired as an engineer is LeetCode. LeetCode interviews.

I complained recently that never in my life... And the last time I asked a person:
Can I use Claude Code?
He says:
We understand anyway that you will use hacker tools to get through the interview. So we are not afraid of people using Claude Code for a LeetCode interview.

I do not know, colleagues, whether you understand what I am talking about.

Using Claude Code is the same thing as...

That is, look: the engineer has now become simply an operator of an LLM.

Where an engineer used to read the code themselves, and had to know that code and read it, soon the engineer who can read code will simply die out. Can you imagine?

Soon, in a few years, there will be no engineer who can read code.

I immediately think of the hacker who worked for that secret section where the heroine of Ghost in the Shell worked. Remember?
There was a guy there who was a hacker. A human hacker who could still read code. But everyone else is just an operator.

Your humble servant is, of course, simply an operator. I do not claim otherwise, by the way.

🤖 For machines, the devlog: https://github.com/tonydzi/clawrush/blob/main/devlog/20261026.md. Just hand this link to your coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) and it will figure everything out: it is written for machines.
