All outputs are real tool calls to the Equibles MCP server from 20 October 2026, about an hour after the release, trimmed.
Two days ago I wrote up how I prep Netflix's earnings with an MCP server: the IR calendar, the guidance history and the deck. It ended with a prompt for after the results. Netflix reported today, so here is that check, run the same evening.
1. What's on file an hour after the release
GetEarningsCallEvent groups everything for one quarter and says what has arrived:
# Netflix Third Quarter 2026 Earnings Interview
- Call date (UTC): 2026-10-20 20:45
- Status: Concluded
Artefacts:
- Audio: pending (Audio capture will retry; next attempt 2026-10-20 22:45 UTC)
- Transcript: pending (Waiting for the recording; next attempt 2026-10-20 22:45 UTC)
- Slides: available (Slide deck captured; last attempt 2026-10-20 21:19 UTC)
- 8-K earnings release: available
Guidance: none extracted from this release yet. This does NOT mean the company gave no guidance.
So the shareholder letter and the 14-page deck are in, the interview transcript isn't yet. That last line matters: an agent that reads "no guidance extracted" as "no guidance given" will tell you something false. The release itself is the source until the extraction catches up.
2. The July guidance next to today's letter
GetGuidance still lists the 16 July release as the latest guidance. ReadDocumentLines on today's 8-K gives the reported side. Put together:
| Metric | Guided 16 July | Reported 20 October |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 revenue growth | 12% | 11.8% ($12.87B) |
| Q3 operating margin | 33.2% | 34.6% |
| 2026 revenue | $51.0B to $51.4B | about $51.1B |
| 2026 operating margin | 31.5% | 31.5% |
| 2026 ad revenue | about $3B | about $2.7B |
| 2026 free cash flow | $12.5B | about $12.0B |
Revenue landed on the forecast, the margin beat it, and two full-year numbers came down. The table alone doesn't say why, which is the part worth reading the letter for.
3. The reasons, in the company's words
Asking the agent to quote the release line for each change gives:
- Q3 margin beat: "ahead of our forecast primarily due to the timing of expenses." Timing, not a new run rate.
- Ad revenue cut: about $2.7B "due to slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities." Subscription revenue growth "outperformed our expectations", which is why the revenue total barely moved.
- Free cash flow cut: to about $12.0B "due primarily to the expected closing of a real estate transaction in Q4."
- Q4 margin: 26.0% guided, which "includes ~120 basis points negative impact associated with our recently announced headcount reductions."
One more fact from the same letter: Netflix bought back 63.9 million shares for $4.8B in Q3, its largest repurchase quarter ever.
Every line above has a line number in the 8-K, so it can be checked against the filing on EDGAR rather than taken on trust.
4. What the tools don't do yet
- The guidance table shows a dash under "Actual" for the 2026 rows. It compares guidance with filed XBRL facts only, never with numbers parsed from a press release, and the full-year facts arrive with the 10-K. Same-day checks therefore read the letter.
- The transcript, management tone and themes come after the recording is processed. The event says when it will try again.
The prompt
"Using Equibles, compare Netflix's Q3 2026 results with the Q3 guidance in the 16 July release, say whether the full-year 2026 revenue, margin and free cash flow targets changed, and quote the release line that explains each change. Link every source."
It's the prompt from the prep post, with one change: "quote the release line" instead of "quote the executives", because the executives' words aren't on file yet.
Setup
- MCP:
https://mcp.equibles.com/mcp. In Claude, add it as a custom connector and sign in with your account. Guides for ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini CLI and others are in the docs. - Netflix's calls, letters and decks: equibles.com/stocks/nflx/earnings-calls.
- Free plan: 100 requests a day across MCP and REST.
The tools used here are on the earnings calls and investor relations docs page, and the management promises recipe runs this check across several quarters.
Nothing here is investment advice.

The "no guidance extracted does NOT mean no guidance" line is the right guard, and it has a timestamp cousin worth adding to the same-day check. When you say the letter was on file an hour after the release, which clock proves it? EDGAR's acceptanceDateTime is not uniform: in 450 filings I measured across 25 companies, the same filing carried a different time depending on which EDGAR file you read, with an Eastern-offset shift in some companies' files and not in others. So I would store the acceptance time from the filing's own header and compare it with the call time in UTC before trusting an "available as of" claim.
Small arithmetic note on the table: the ad cut (about $3B to $2.7B) is roughly -10%, the free cash flow cut ($12.5B to $12.0B) is -4%, while 2026 revenue sits inside its guided range. So the two "came down" lines are very different sizes, and a column with the percentage change would make that visible to the agent without it re-deriving it.
On the tooling side, I built canli-mcp (free, MIT, no key, runs locally:
npx -y canli-mcp, github.com/arhancanli/canlicapital) which covers EDGAR filings and XBRL facts, so I'm biased; I'd be curious how Equibles handles a 10-K/A restating a figure that the 8-K letter gave first.
