To use Gemini on a Samsung Galaxy, press and hold the side button, then speak or type. That is Samsung's default, and for most buyers it is the whole setup. The rest of this guide covers the first launch, switching the long press away from Bixby, using Gemini on your screen, controlling what Google keeps, and fixing it when it won't open.

Everything here comes from Samsung and Google documentation as of November 2026. I haven't tested every model, so if a menu name differs on your phone, trust the phone.

Get the first launch working

Hold the side button for about a second, then speak or type. The first launch asks you to accept terms, sign in and allow the microphone. Most stalls come from one of two things: no personal Google account is signed in, or only a work or school account is. Add a personal account and most of the problems go away.

A quick check helps. Long-press the side button and see whether the Gemini bar appears at the bottom. If nothing happens, update the Google and Gemini apps in the Play Store. Then run one spoken test, like asking for a 7 a.m. alarm. If that works, your microphone, permissions and account are fine.

Switch long press from Bixby to Gemini

Per Samsung, the path is Settings, then Advanced features, then Side button, then Long press. Choose the assistant you want. Menu names shift a little by model and One UI version, so search settings for ”side button” if yours looks different. Secondhand phones and phones someone tweaked earlier are the usual cases where Bixby is still assigned.

There is one trap. When long press points at Bixby or another assistant, the side button no longer opens the power-off menu. To turn the phone off, use the power icon in the Quick panel, or press Side plus Volume Down. People change the setting and then wonder how to shut the phone down.

Ask about what is already on your screen

Open the article or message first, then call Gemini and ask about it. A prompt like ”summarize this in three bullets” works well on long pages. The button that attaches the current screen is labeled differently across versions, so paste the text or attach a screenshot when you can't find it.

Secure apps, including banking apps, block screen capture. A failed summary there is expected, not a bug. For a one-shot answer about something on screen, such as identifying an object in a photo and finding where to buy it, Circle to Search is often quicker. Use Gemini when you need to shape, rewrite or keep asking.

Control what Gemini saves

Gemini Apps Activity is on by default for adult accounts. Google's help page says activity older than 18 months is deleted automatically, and you can change that window to 3 or 36 months. Open Activity in the Gemini app or on gemini.google.com to turn saving off, or to turn it off and delete what's stored. You can clear everything, the last hour, the last day, or a custom range.

Even with activity off, Google says conversations may be kept for up to 72 hours to deliver the service and handle feedback. So keep Social Security numbers, account numbers, medical records and confidential work files out of any chat, whatever the toggle says. Work and school accounts often can't change these settings at all.

Fix it when it won't open

Most failures come down to a setting, an update or an account. The symptom fix table in the original post lists the first thing to check for each one, so you can go straight to the likely fix.

A common pattern: a secondhand phone has long press set to Bixby, the owner decides Gemini is broken, and then reinstalls the app. The app was rarely the problem, so check the trigger before reinstalling anything. If the voice trigger misfires, open the Google app's voice settings and confirm the trigger and microphone permission.

Is Gemini free on a Galaxy?

The core experience is free with a Google account, with usage limits. Paid Google AI plans raise those limits and unlock higher-end models and features such as video generation. Secondary sources disagree on the exact free-tier numbers, so I won't quote them here. Read Google's plan page on the day you decide.

A practical test: use the free tier for a week. If you rarely see a limit message, stay on free. Upgrade in the week you actually run into the limit. Samsung has bundled Google AI trials with some phones, but those offers have end dates, so check the terms for your own purchase.

Each symptom has one setting to check first, and the original post lists them:
