I Built a Strategy Guide Tool for Astral Lords — Here's What I Learned About Their Combat Math

Been playing Astral Lords for about three weeks now and honestly the combat system is way deeper than it looks on the surface. What started as "let me figure out which celestial lord counters the Shadow faction" turned into a full spreadsheet rabbit hole.

The game uses a rock-paper-scissors mechanic between the four celestial houses (Solar, Lunar, Stellar, Void), but there's hidden weights on turn order and faction bonuses that the tutorial never explains. I ended up building a small static site generator that pulls from my notes and spits out matchup tables — nothing fancy, just markdown with some custom shortcodes.

Biggest discoveries:

  • Turn speed isn't just agility. Your lord's celestial alignment adds a hidden modifier that can push you ahead even with lower stats. Void lords in particular get a +8 priority on opening turns, which is why they feel oppressive in PvP.

  • The counter system has partial overlaps. Lunar doesn't just beat Solar — it also gets 15% resistance against Stellar abilities. This isn't documented anywhere in-game but I tested it across 40+ skirmishes and the numbers hold up.

  • Buff stacking has diminishing returns after 3 stacks. The UI shows the icons piling up but the actual stat gain drops hard. Most players (me included) were wasting turns over-buffing.

I threw the full breakdown with faction tables and turn-order calculations on a dedicated site since it got too long for a single post. Been updating it as the meta shifts.
