What happened
Menlo Ventures published its fourth annual State of Enterprise AI report, and the headline number is hard to ignore: enterprise AI deployment spending reached $177B by September 2026, up from $33B a year earlier โ a 5.4x jump that accelerates last year's 3.9x growth. Per the report, every dollar invested in developing models this year is generating $1.70 of revenue, and AI deployment spend already equals more than 30% of public cloud revenue versus just 6% a year ago. The findings draw on a survey of nearly 400 US enterprise decision-makers controlling more than $4B in AI spend, fielded by Morning Consult from September 8-26, 2026.
Where the money goes
Coding takes 44% of the $77.3B AI app market and chatbots 32%. Spending on using AI โ $176.8B, up 5.4x โ now far outpaces spending on building models, estimated at $102.5B, up 5.3x. Market concentration is striking: 69% of every enterprise AI dollar goes to Anthropic, Google and OpenAI. The report also notes that the share of enterprises paying for AI rose only from 55% to 65%, which means growth is driven by existing adopters spending much more, not by a wave of new buyers. Enterprise AI application spending reached about $77B, with coding at $34B.
How agents changed the picture
The bigger shift is who consumes AI. Per OpenRouter data cited in the report, AI agents now generate 80% of all tokens on the platform โ about 130.9 trillion per week, roughly 7x human-driven usage. Agents overtook humans there in February 2026, and since then agent token consumption has grown 37x while human-driven usage grew 5x. That rewrites software economics: budgets stop being tied to the number of employees and start being tied to how much work agents actually complete, which is why Menlo expects spending to keep compounding as agents take on longer horizons and multi-agent coordination.
IMPACT
For founders and platform teams there are three practical takeaways. First, the money has moved from experiments to production deployment โ if your AI roadmap is still in pilot stage, the market baseline has already shifted without you. Second, agent workloads dominate token consumption, so latency, reliability and cost control for agentic traffic now matter more than chat interfaces. Third, with 69% of dollars flowing to three vendors, vendor diversification, prompt caching and model routing are becoming core finance decisions rather than engineering niceties. Companies that operationalize agent workloads in this budget cycle will set the benchmarks everyone else gets measured against.
